sptinger pup training

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't train anything really mate, the sit is fine, and recall thats about it, I have a pup of similar age and I am in no rush at all, I am letting him get used to the world-surroundings whilst having some fun with me.

I was totally diffrent with my first spaniel, to eager and the whole training fell flat in my face when she reached her adolescence, I had to re-train her and it was tough doing the same job twice.

GOOD LUCK and enjoy the pup, where in the country are you mate??

I have a 14 week old springer pup which i am going to train up..

I am waiting until she is about 5-6 months old to start the real stuff

but is there anything that i should / can be getting on with at this age.

She is sitting when asked to most of the time.

Any advice welcomed...

Cheers

i am at the same stage too my pup is 12 1/2 weeks and sitting well close in and walking on the lead well (he pulls at times but pups will i'm getting him out of that habit slowly) i want to build a storng recall ready for formal training at 5-6months ish. he respond really well to treats and i have just been using a few of his dry biscuits till now. is there a treat that i can give him, little ones for when he does well that he will really like and that doesnt break the bank? i heard of using cheese, is this right?

cheese and salami are good, better are dog type things from the pet shop, smackos, frolic anything soft and smelly.

to make it cheaper you can dry game meat in the oven for a bit. a bit messy in the pocket but they are mad for it.

treats a last resort you could be building problems for the future like spitting out a retrieve before delivering it to hand as the dog is expecting to eat a treat.plus the dog could become a bit of a potterer when hunting allways looking to you for a treat instead of nose down and hunting the theory is the retrieve after the find and flush is all the reward the dog wants.I am not saying treats don't have their uses but be carefull don't over do it. atb.
