Advice for a lone ferreter

Recommended Posts

Cheers for the constructive comments and advice :clapper:

I've just surveyed part of the land and where most of the rabbits seem to be (they destroyed over an acre of wheat there this year!) the 4 metre wide ancient hedge is actually on a large bank and the rabbits seem to be holed up on one side with thier burrows going out into the field so I think I'll try these first.

Last year I got one of them orange deben locators (I've still got the grey box one from1983 and it still works!)

Took your advice and got a couple of gate nets. What are the best type of sticks/posts to put them up with?

And finally as I only live a few minutes walk from the land I'm intending to to some pre-trimming etc.

Hope all goes well

Regards

Chris

Hi folks,

Second post after new members section. I'm just rekindling my joy of ferreting from when I was a lad. I've got the gear and last year did my first outing on our own bit of land and managed a few rabbits for both first time ferrets.

However, my dilemma is that I've now been given plenty of local land and permission but I don't really have anyone dedicated enough to come along and help.

All the warrens are situated in thick hedgerows and small fields and when I was a lad you needed two to ferret them properly. So my question is does anyone have any helpful advice or ideas on how to ferret this places by oneself (I don't want to let the local landowners down).

Failing that is there anyone in the South Somerset area that wants to team up?

Regards

Chris.

Hi ellir0305 and Sparko,

Cheers for the replies, yes it would be great to make up a hunting team as I've realised that once you've got permission from one landonwer it gets easier as you need the permission of the adjacent ones.

I'm out this weekend at the Landrover show at the Bath and West showground so I'll get back to you later.

Ellir0305 when I was at lad at Huish school in langport we used to ferret up near redhill in Curry. There was a lady there who owned a large woodland who gave permission, maybe this area could also be rekindled.

I only live 5 miles from langport and will be probably stopping over there this weekend to check out the fishing for pike later in the winter.

Speak later.

Regards

Chris

I have been ferreting for 20 years and most of that has been on my own. I have gotten into a pattern of doing things and it works well. I use my Jack russel and 410 shotgun too which makes life a little easier. I live in Bristol and would be happy to go out with you if you need a ferreting companion. Cheers Kevin

I was in the same possition , just find someone in the area/nieghbor who is into shooting etc and ask em along to give you a hand. I did that with a neighbour now we're a proper team almost a problem now as he gets jealous if he finds out I've been out and he hasn'nt been invited along!
