If you had a right of way it would give you firmer ground to argue from.

Hope so....................just a thought< there's a phrase/saying that goes something like " keep your friends close and your enemies closer " See if you can get to know him you might get some permission outa him?.......Just a thought. I'm a nice guy me I am!

majority of farmers are the same i know a man who lives in a cottage on some land surounded by 3 farms now 2 of the farmers are sound and alsong as dogs are leashed around stock they are easy going the other man who allows us to ferret etc is a diff kettle of fish no dogs what so ever on his land anyway the man who lives on the cottage has horses etc and the comon land behind his house hills reservwires etc ocasionaly have sheep on it but the comon land bit means its basicaly no ones land and anyone can walk anywhere on it with your dog unleashed aslong as its not hanging of sheep etc even though he knew the lad and his dogs when his jack russel and doberman pup got out rather than call the boy and say the dogs were out come get them he went home got his 12 bore and the dogs were no more this was all withing 200 yards of the mans house the police done nothing the lad ended up kicking the farmers door through and being remanded in custody but its a bloody joke that even when they no the dogs in question they can be so ignorant .

p.s the owner of the dogs keeps goats with kids chickens duck horse's a few fancy sheep a pig turkeys etc as most small holders do and the dogs were broken and run loose among them all the farmer knew this and still couldnt care. the man now has a big malinois x he rescued the farmer now cant keep sheep on the comon land as the man just lets the malinois over till it kills half a dozen then sticks it back in the run so in the long run these farmers are just standing on there own toes.

rather than allow a young lad to break his dog to stock and learn to respect the animals and country side they chase the youngsters who in return go to all extremes kill animals burn bails set barns on fire poach etc and grow up hating farmers and destroying the countryside and there land which would all have been help with a little respect and some guidance .

I know what your saying mate. I had the same problem, espeacially this time of year with the run up to pheasant season.

There is a lovely walk close by, nice footpaths, the farmer use to drive up and stop for a chat and ask for the dogs to be leashed up. Well they should be really on a public foot path, but who does anyway???

Within 4/5 times of him stopping to speak with me i asked the question about pest control. He said he had one chap doing it, but lives 10 miles away.

I stepped in and told him im 3 miles away, mentioned a few farmers who know me in the area (this helps too) Job done, got 3,000 hectares to work with.

Smile to him, get to know him, be polite, bite your tongue, show respect. It brings results.

This one needs thinking about: "Treat your enemy as though he might become your friend, and your friend as though he might become your enemy"

i understand from both side s i have a spaniel and from a very early age i have broke her in walking through feilds with sheep cattle ducks geese any thing and every thing until she showed no interest what so ever then only when 100% confident in her did i let her walk to heel of the lead, many times walked through feilds whith sheep and cattle in and she is of the lead not once has she ever battered an eylid. i even train at a dog club that have a heard in the feild where we train. however took her beating for the first time yesterday and on the second drive i had to go straight across a feild full of sheep. sat at heel for bout 10 min waitng for whistle walked on half way accros the feild she just turned and ran straight toward the sheep chased them about 50 yards before she realised i was blowing stop whistle then stoped came back, i gues all im trying to say is you can never 100 % trust your dog some time s excitment gets the better of them no matter how well you break them in so i gues the best way for the farmer is for all dogs to be on he lead but still no need to be rude! i have never been asked by a farmer to lead my dogs maybe because there spaniels and not the "dreaded lurcher that only want to chase and kill", some farmers do single out certain people by there breed of dogs which in my opinon is wrong.

Look up defras website the dog act and right to roam and some other act is explained there it will tell you what you want to know and then you have the actual leagalities no offence but i can see where hes coming from apart from the attitude there are people who do not control their dogs and hes not to know you will control yours as many people claim to control their dogs i know a few of the not my dog brigade or i can make my dog do such and such whilst watching it blatenly do the opposite of what was commanded of it so hes probably just fed up with that kind of stuff and such has sat on a poker and its giving him the odd nip here and there
