Got two Border / Lakelands mate. They took a fair while to come on (4 now) and I nearly gave up on em several times but I'm glad I kept on at em because they're both crackers now. No great blood lines to talk of but they've both got the heart and thats all that really matters to me.

Yeh think you can go along with the old saying that borders take a bit longer to come on.

Not saying they took 4 yrs to start as they showed promise early on but they're both a lot more settled now for sure and just get on with the job. Were as your pat's for instance seem to get on and settle that bit earlier. Mind you, it also depends on what they see and at what time of course !! Its my fault a bit as these two could probably have been shown a bit more at an earlier age but it's quite difficult when your trying to bring young dogs on but at the same time working a tried and tested dog because you need to be in and out with no messing and 7 times out of ten you end up using the dog you have most trust in !!!!!

Thanks for your kind comments mate anyway.

I have a border lakey (retired now after losing an eye) and she was acracking little grafter. But it will depend on the parents as to wether any cross is going to work.If both parents work then you have a good chance, but if the border in the cross is just used for bushing or ratting you might struggle to produce a cross that will be 100% underground.

A couple of points...

1. Are people talking about Borders being late starters through experience or hearsay (Plummer being the biggest culprit) or experience?

2. WillHunt, was your terrier more Border or Lakey looking; ie. did it have a short muzzle like a Border, which can be prone to eye bites?

Also, does a Fell terrier that works at seven months, becomes rock hard if not ruined, have the same working longevitey of a Border that starts a year later...? Pound for pound, is their working life shorter, longer or roughly the same...?
