Kay 3,709
I dont really get why anyone would want to mix something that domesticated & sociable to something thats solitary & wild Quote Link to post
heritage 202
the best working ferrets that you can find are simply " ferrets" theres no need to add the polecat blood line to better your own working stock as it wouldnt make a marked improvement untill the 3rd/4th generation. good workers from proven lines is all thats needed. whin 463
get abit of wild bllood in them mate and a big pair of welders gloves saw a guy from wales, with wild polecats and there crosses,no better than normal ferrets , Quote Link to post
dogs-n-natives 1,182
About 11 years ago I had the same crazy idea that id add wild polecat blood to my ferrets..... now its a long story, but in a nutshell it was a complete waste of time and effort, and I almost ruined a good line of workers. Even the 3rd generation were shite compared to any decent working ferret. Kay, your spot on... to breed wild poley with a ferret is in fact taking one huge step backwards... only way to get better ferrets is by selectively breeding the best workers to the best workers, and as we all know, a good worker has to be very easy to handle and not shy at all of human contact. atb DnN Quote Link to post

Guest lavyheed
Try sticking a first generation polecat x or a wild polecat down a hole and you will lose it. Stick with the ferret,at least that does what it does best and will work for you. Edited October 11, 2009 by lavyheed Quote Link to post

If isnt broken dont mend it just keep your own lines going i really dont think adding polecat will do anything other than create very skitty , mixed up offsprings Quote Link to post

Kay 3,709
I dont think swapping litters will make any difference, its nature , you cant alter there basic make up , i dont think its anything to do with the jill being domesticated if you swap over Apart from anything else you will need to hang on to the offsprings for christ knows how long before making any decision on what stays & what goes , moving on unsuitable animals will be hard , but full hybrids it will be almost impossible , who wants stock they cant handle & are basically as much use as a chocolate fireguard Quote Link to post
