billy badger 0
Went out ferreting yesterday for the first time this season. 7 am and we was on our way to the permission dogs in the back, ferrets scratching at the box and both full of exciment as when i checked it about a month ago there was rabbits everywhere more than i had ever seen here before. The warrens on this particular piece of land are spread out over a grass field so its perfect for bolting them to the dog. As we pulled into the gate way, i could see a large mound of sand that had been dumped on the first warren i just thought the farmer might of filled this sett in as theres many hidden bolt holes to it which the cows could easily fall down. Any way, we carried on as usual and managed 1 out where it had dug back into the warren. Next warren, same again the holes had all been filled in and the wasn't even a scratchin on the loose sand which would indicate the sign of rabbits. We carried on working our way across the field checking the warrens but most of the holes had been filled in, by the time we had reached the other end of the field we had got 2 out of 2 runs which was very dissapointing as we should of had at least 15 by now with plenty left hiding in the elephant grass for next time. We sat down with the flask and started discussing the situation when an elderly bloke came walking up and started asking about the handfulls of rabbits that we'd been getting just lately and why today we had brought the dogs with us. Anyway, it turns out someone else had been given permission with out me being informed and had been 3 times in the last week and had been leaving with between 10 and 30 rabbits everytime ( as they netted up ) and because the rabbits had basically been wiped out they had filled all the setts in with sand from the farm yard :@ :@ :@. I've now been kiced off the land now after 'having words' with the famer. I've got a couple of other pieces of permission but none as good as what this was as all the warrens are in thick headgrows where its almost impossible to nett up and the rabbits just run in the hedge if they're not netted so all in all unless i gain some new permission this seasons ferretings gone out the window No pictures as it was a waste of time getting the camera out!
