mattydski 560
Firstly, for those that dont know my modus operandi, I only ferret on land that is heavily shot, for fun, and enjoyment. They are a clean up tool when conditions permit. So, I had arranged a day out today, my first outing this year....and Bess's first outing ever.... (other than in our own woods, where she bought be a bunny back at my last barbeque..much to the disgust of my guests ). We met at my house at about 1.30pm and travelled to Perth in the landy, where we had arranged to meet another mate of mine, who likes the odd day out.. We picked him up en route, and set up in the first warren.. We had high hopes for this, as every time we lamped this area (which borders on to an organic carrot field) there were always plenty of escapees. We put about ten nets out, my mate Andrew, who knows Bess well was given the task of slipping the dog, should the need occur. After we were ready, I slipped one of the collared up Jills down the holes...we had a bout half an hour of trying, swapped ferrets , but nothing came up. She was going in and out of the holes, but no one home. But then......the first kill of the day She found it whilst I was clearing the nets up!! We decided to move on. We drove in to another field and walked to another warren. We walked in down wind and were rewarded with the sight of a rabbits ears pop down the hole. (game on) We netted up, got the dog ready and waited for the action as the ferret went down. We gave it about half an hour, then I dug out the locator, the jill was still moving, not holed up. So I left if longer...Nothing.... : Then I monitored the progress again with the locator, she was still moving..I gathered she was getting the run around from the rabbit, as it was a deep, long warren. And we knewbugs was at home!! I decided to slip another jill in to the hole to speed up proceedings.... Again.........nothing!! They began to remain static, so I feared a lay up!! The general concensus was to get the digging gear from the truck, so I walked back 20 paces............when............'Matty' Mr A shouted, I turned round to see ma little dog legging it after the bunny.... one had slipped the nets..go Bess!! She nailed it..cleanly!! I was more excited than I can tell you It was all that was home...though.. We then tried to let Andrew get a shot with my rifle...but it was not to be, so we let him have a go with his air rifle, which we did our best to sort for him, but again it was not going to be.....Poor scope, loose woodwork etc, etc... We ended the day on one rabbit............but boy..........what a bunny Quote Link to post

mattydski 560
Definitely 'B', she will get a lot more outings soon, just need to rid my main hunting ground in fife of the stock for the winter, before I have a clear up there. Then we are set to take on an MOD project of about 3000 acres plus, so that will open up land not previously shot, should see some good numbers then. Had a go with the new purses you donated to the cause...very good they were too mate!! Thanks Bess did good Scotty, was a proud dad for sure....You get to meet her in due course!! Thanks all. You are all correct, it is never about the numbers, I get plenty of them with the rifle, but the day was enjoyed enormously, already had a thanks text message from my mate asking when he can 'slip the dog' again...it makes it all worthwhile... Darryl My rifle is fine mate, it gets used 3-4 times a week as my primary method of professional vermin control, his has never been used against quarry and was brought out to try, he was not allowed to use it against live quarry due to his inability to get a group at 30 yards.... He was not able to get a shot with my FAC because there was nothing in the area safe to shoot.. Edited October 11, 2009 by mattydski Quote Link to post
