Brimmer 220
Hi guys, good to be back at it. After two attempts trying to start off our season towards the end of Sept were scuppered by the unusually high autumn temps, we finally got out for a day on the rabbits today. The two previous attempts saw us heading for home within an hour or so due to the 18 degrees c temps and the runners blowing. (pretty close to finishing them as there black dogs, the sun hits them hard when putting a lot of runs in.) There were flies everywhere on the kills, also most of the rabbits were three-quarter grown and no challenge for any animal. (in between the mixi one's!) Me and the old feller went mob handed today, 3 runners , 7 ferrets (allthough 2 did not get used), and my horrible old terrier for back up in case the temperature got too high and put the runners out of action. All went pretty well, the two young runners starting there second season, took rabbits easy off the seat and running, marking up as well. (just a little heedless, but nothing serious). The old runner at 10 yrs old showed he can still do it. The ferrets that got used, all last years proved thereselves again starting off their second season, the three jills sticking with anything, and the two hobs showing who the bosses are. The two older hobs from 2007 did not get a look in this time poor buggers, but will soon be up to no good. Even the obnoxious old russell pulled his weight with the marking up, and got on with the other dogs nearly all day! The numbers of rabbits on the land seem down a little at present, think the mixi has hit them hard this year, plus there seems to be a ever increasing number of feral ferrets around, I have only come across a handfull in 20 yrs on the land we go on, but have come across 2 so far this year, its funny how they seem to take up residence in the large warrens, but the rabbits still live in them. Think they must be pretty laid back as long as there belly is full! Ouch! No more rabbits please! Ended up with 54 rabbits, all in good order and fully grown! Can see us struggling later in the season for many rabbits, but untill then, they will be hit hard! Quote Link to post
