N/V Waste of time? or a must buy?

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I've never used Night vision before but i am very interested in making aa purchase. But!

Is it a waste of money? What is a Good, bad and ugly N/V to buy?

Any ideas N/V owners........? Please share you experiences.

Thanks

What you could see with nitevistion you could see with a flash of the lamp. But it did come in handy when we thought we spotted a 4x4 turned out it was a parked up tractor :icon_redface:

night vision is exellent...for watching fox's as they come in its second to none...........now for the bad news.....only consider gen 3 everything else isnt worth a w*nk!!!!!! also if you use it alot on the same eye it will f*ck your vision......spend £1000 or dont bother...the diference from gen 3 to everything else is vast!!!! you have been warned

On an Air rifle it can be ok and "reasonably" cost effective.

For higher power, especially centrefire you need a serious amount of money, a dedicated rifle, and night vision binos, check out the digital stuff....oh yes.... and it screws up your eyes when you look away!!

But if I had the odd £5-7K available for very limited use I would invest!

£100-200 worth of lamping kit with a dimmer can be a good alternative for us mere mortals!

NV is far from a waist of time, i have been using NV for over 10 years and its come a long way, its all down to what rifle you want to put it on and how far you wish to see and shoot.

Gen 1 + is good on air rifles to shoot out to 30 to 60 yards price is around £500 new, S/hand from £250 to £450

Gen 2 + as above and for rimmy and centerfire rifles, to shoot out to 50 yards to 200 yards if its a good unit, price from £1200 to £3000 S/hand from £500 to £1500

Gen 3 for all the above, you get a much better image but you pay the price from £2500 to £10,000 S/hand from £1200 to £5000

Digital is the latest to hit the market, its OK some of the units are as good as the mid range Gen 2+ stuff but its not as good as the top end Gen 2+, good thing about digital is you can not damage it in day light, like you can with NV that use image intensifiers tubes which are the Gen 1 / 2 /3

They has been no proof of NV damaging your eye sight, you can get disorientated and feel a bit giddy after looking through a unit but this does go for most people are using NV for a while

Hope this helps.
