Grousekeeper84 2
Its not a total waste of time but cheap stuff is. U have to be using gen 2+ or higher to make it worth while. To make it really efficient u need to have a thermal imager, goggles and a scope otherwise ur as well using a lamp and filters for anthing touchy. Quote Link to post
woz 260
night vision is exellent...for watching fox's as they come in its second to none...........now for the bad news.....only consider gen 3 everything else isnt worth a w*nk!!!!!! also if you use it alot on the same eye it will f*ck your vision......spend £1000 or dont bother...the diference from gen 3 to everything else is vast!!!! you have been warned Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
On an Air rifle it can be ok and "reasonably" cost effective. For higher power, especially centrefire you need a serious amount of money, a dedicated rifle, and night vision binos, check out the digital stuff....oh yes.... and it screws up your eyes when you look away!! But if I had the odd £5-7K available for very limited use I would invest! £100-200 worth of lamping kit with a dimmer can be a good alternative for us mere mortals! Quote Link to post
pestcontrol121 11
NV is far from a waist of time, i have been using NV for over 10 years and its come a long way, its all down to what rifle you want to put it on and how far you wish to see and shoot. Gen 1 + is good on air rifles to shoot out to 30 to 60 yards price is around £500 new, S/hand from £250 to £450 Gen 2 + as above and for rimmy and centerfire rifles, to shoot out to 50 yards to 200 yards if its a good unit, price from £1200 to £3000 S/hand from £500 to £1500 Gen 3 for all the above, you get a much better image but you pay the price from £2500 to £10,000 S/hand from £1200 to £5000 Digital is the latest to hit the market, its OK some of the units are as good as the mid range Gen 2+ stuff but its not as good as the top end Gen 2+, good thing about digital is you can not damage it in day light, like you can with NV that use image intensifiers tubes which are the Gen 1 / 2 /3 They has been no proof of NV damaging your eye sight, you can get disorientated and feel a bit giddy after looking through a unit but this does go for most people are using NV for a while Hope this helps. MrYou 0
after spending £300 on a yukon etc , i found it was junk at best, we now use a cheep red lazer, with a dot like a 10p at 25yds ,& it gets bigger at 50yds in the barns etc on a airrifle for rats etc..great fun. Quote Link to post
