the sitting game.

Recommended Posts

Left the house yesterday evening at 5.45 to go sit with the rifle to wait for foxes.

Getting there at 6.10 the sun was already on the horizon "crickey I thought I,ve mis-judged this. The gates were locked and as I was in my van I had no key, so a call to the keeper and I was on my way up the track. Driving through the shelter belt I was immediatley greeted by a doe. Letting her merge back into the forestry I carried on into the 60 acre stubble. Driving in about a third of the way I parked up to set the ambush.

There was another 6 roe out grazing does and followers.MMM thats 7 now.

Anyways the first fox showed about 25 minutes before dark, and walked down the far headland about 500m away. Then another appeared and jumped onto a round bale about 500m again. Wish I had the 7mm but had the 2 sakos with me,and by now I was engrosed in the deer there were 18 out grazing, dotted about all over the field in family groups. Just goes to show that even in a white van if you are still and quiet everything forgets your there quickly.

The doe and follower that had appeared about 100 yards of the van kept looking back into the wood. Will this be another follower I thought or a fox?.

By now the light had almost gone when out walked number 19 from the wood.

I strained my eyes through the Lecia,s and could just make out some head gear.

I raised the rifle zoomed out the Kahles to about 6 aimed into the deers chest (to dark for a neck shot) and bang he dropped to shot and never even kicked.

Driving accross to him after the doe and follower had gone I set about a few photos and the gralloch.

Back tonignt to wait for the foxes I will park furter up the field.

Then on to meet Max and the keeper and landowner on a different patch.

A swap of rifles lamp out and a nights foxing only seeing 2 and shooting one of them a lamp shy one at about 260m.

We saw a further 15 deer all well out in the stubbles proving that at the moment they are fairly nocturnal and all now in winter coats. As were me and Max it was freezing about midnight stood on the back of the pickup. BBBBBBBBBBBrrrrrrr.
