During the summer while its the quite period I like to make a few walking sticks, usually about 6 or 7 to give away to friends and to some of the farmers where I have permission. Mainly I use Hazel shanks but also Holly and Blackthorne, I cut the shanks 2 Winters back so when I come to use them they have had at least 18 months to dry.

what do you think?

NICE WORK MATE ,

MADE A FEW MYSELF , LIKE WISE MAINLY HAZEL , THOUGH I DO LIKE HOLLY STRIPPED THEN RASPED SO THE KNOTS BECOME PROMINANT , IAM LUCKEY AS IAM SURROUNDED BY BLACKTHORN , JUST GOT TO WALK THROUGH MY BACK GATE :D

MY FIRST I MADE THE CROOK FROM 1 " THICK MARINE PLY , AN EXCELLENT STARTER MATERIAL AS ITS VERY STABLE AND BECAUSE ITS LAMINATED VERY STRONG

THERES A NUMBER OF WAYS TO STRAIGHTEN THE SHANK ... I TEND TO USE TIN FOIL AROUND THE SHANK THEN PLACE OVER A FLAME , BEING CAREFUL NOT TO SCORCH .......... THEN SIMPLY EYE THROUGH THE SHANK AND BEND OVER YOUR KNEE TILL STRAIGHT

ALL THE BEST DUCKWING ;)

I just use a Black & Decker Hot Air Gun; if you are careful just apply heat to the few inches you want to straiten, after a minute or so of GENTLE HEAT just bend it over your knee. Be careful not to scorch the shank, you can put tin foil round it until you get the hang of it. After a few goes you will find it pretty easy.
