Fat-Ferret 857
Me and a friend of mine had a drive to some ground this morning that we tried last week, I had 2 kits born very early this year that I kept back and an older ferret to show them the ropes, Its hard going ferreting here as the warrens are very very big and tight together, there where times we had 200yrds of Long Net down and 20 or 30 purse nets and we where still missing rabbits that where bolting from the next sets! But thats the way the ground is and we just put up with it. We search hard for smaller warrens out on there own, and there are a few here and there, so we tried them as well in the earlier part of the day. Our first set wasnt marked by the dog as it was just the first small one we arrived at and decided to give it a run, But it was empty. The second set looked good, and we wrapped two 100yrd Long Nets round, and purse netted anything outside and scattered a few through the middle, 20 minutes later and nothing had shifted, I got a mark on one ferret of 2ft, As soon as I began to dig, the ferret moved, so I stopped to see what would happen and one bolted behind, as I was taking it from the Long Net, The dog began to dig where we had the mark, and after watching her for a few minutes she pulled a rabbit out by the back leg, let it go and caught it! My mate back filled the hole as we thought it was the one the ferret stopped up, But as soonas we began to lift the nets, the dog started digging and pulled out a second rabbit! We couldnt believe it, this one was very dead and had obviously had a touch from the ferret, It was great watching the little dog digging them out & it was the first time I ever saw her doing anything like it. We had a few bolts and one dig of our own over the next couple of sets, But it was slow going and we missed a few on the bigger sets, But the dog was enjoying it and the weather was nice. After lunchtime, the dog had ANOTHER dig of her own after I cut through the sod and got a foot down, She was really getting into the digging and removed a third rabbit with the ferret on the back of it. We had a couple more as we done the last set and the dog had a brilliant run at a bolter which she over took and struck with great style, Making it look very easy. We headed home with ten rabbits, sleepy young ferrets, who done very well, and a very tired and very dirty dog! Edited October 8, 2009 by Fat-Ferret Quote Link to post
