Advice Requested

I have recently had a visit from my FEO in relation to my first FAC. He has told me that there shouldn't be any problems, and God willing I will receive my FAC within a few weeks. I have been doing rabbit control in my local area with an air rifle and a shotgun. I would like to get a .22lr to improve my bag sizes. Does any one have any reccommendations as to which particular rifle would be best? I would prefer a bolt action as it would be more reliable and avoid 'spray and pray', with detachable box magazine ideally. I have a budget of £400. Thanks in advance,

You can usually pick up second hand 452's, Americans or Varmints for around £100, new ones £250-£350. I wouldn't bother with the 453 the only difference is a set trigger which isn't much use for rabbiting. Lots of gun shops even do packages including a SAK Moderator (need a slot for this on your FAC tho), then it's a recoiless, virtually silent rabbit basher.

there are other rifles out there but the cz it seems is the value for money/robust/reliable weapon of the bunny basher

I just got my fac and i have bought a cz 452 varmint with bushnell sportman 3-9x40 scope for £400 brand new its a good kit for a good price and its got a three year garantee bit better than buying second hand, if you have the money buy new every time, and sorry got a mod with it as well

Cool!, THanks for all the really helpful replies guys. Ill be investing in a CZ 452 with moderator then. I already have applied for the mod on my FAC. Im not interested in the set trigger. I have a lot of centre fire rifle experience with the military, so would prefer a two stage trigger to mimic a military rifle as close as possible, as that is what I am confortable with. Thanks again.

I am just waiting for my FAC to come back, with a variation on it. My RFD has taken my old CZ in, and I have reserved a new CZ "style" .22rf. It has a nickel finish action and a black abs stock. $329, that's pounds not dollars, but the pound sign won't work??!! I am also getting a new mod and scope mounts. Might be back in action next week.

Hi all.

I've just had my visit from my local firearms officer..........

An i just spent this afternoon at a gun shop getting the feel for a new rifle that suits me.

We came to the conclusion that i would be better with a CZ 452 .17 hmr ABS stock with a 16" barrel and moderator.

I only had a .22 LR on my initial application so i phoned my FAO and had made the amendments. Really helpful guy.

Just need to wait now for my licence..........

Waiting for my cabinet to arrive before putting my application in but seriously looking at a .22LR CZ Silhouette with a SAK although my mate who I go lamping with (using his Defender) doesn't want me getting a 16" as he has had his bonnet shot before. I think that will be fine, I initially looked at the 16" as I thought it would be easier jumping in and out of the 4x4 but I use his 20" Varmint at the mo and manage ok... and hey the 20" is cheaper.

 

What made you change to the HMR in the end?

After a long discussion with my local dealer he explained that the .17 hmr was in fact a safer round. Although the velocity is higher the round will not ricochet like a .22.

The choice for a 16" barrel was due to when a moderator was fitted it made the length of the barrel 21-22" long. I felt the weight of both wood stock CZ452 and the CZ 452 with the ABS plastic and it was much lighter.... I didn't like the look of the black plastic stock with the chrome barrel but it did feel right. An after alot of thought and time with both rifles i feel it would be the one for me.

 

I would avoid the 20" if it's the model with the non removable sights. This is known as "The Farmer". the quality isn't there but it is £100 cheaper.....!

Chap..lets not get into this HMR being SAFER than a .22lr as the rounds do not ricochet...that arguement is B******t!!!

 

16 or 20 inch makes little difference for the average shooter accuracy wise, but the longer barrel is cheaper and the shorter barrel "MAY" be more convenient in some situations.

 

In simple terms it comes down to what you need and what you are comfortable with

Did your local friendly dealer explain the difference with ammo price ?
