Kennelling a pup with an older dog

Recommended Posts

What do you guys think?

Should a pup be kennelled with an older dog or kept in solitary?

I know pups settle down quicker with another dog.

I heard a pup kept with another dog would be less responsive to training being more interested in the older dog than the trainer.

But on the other hand a pup following and learning from an experianced working dog also sounds like a benefit

Thoughts and experiances please.

i put my pup with the older dog when we first had him and they got on great the older one took on the role of dad basically. brought the pup on great and stopped him from whineing it was great. 5 months down the line they are stil together. be surprised how much they pick up from the other one being around.

Iv'e never had a problem with it ,I prefer to kennel two together, but I have three so my oldest is on his own in kennels ,but with the other two.when I am about,he and the youngest play like pups,Smokey the middle dog is the odd one out.The other two would bully him a bit if I let them.

depends on the other dog some dogs dont mind pups pullin there ears an tails etc some take exception to it an you can end up with a dead pup. i recently introduced a new member to the pack she was 8mnths and the others wouldnt let her in the bed and when there out you can see why she bugs the shit outa them never leaves them alone the annoying little sod. bearing in mind shes in with a cocker, a lab and a pointer x and shes a 19tts lurcher. had to construct another pen smartish and a kennel. what kind o dogs are they i cant kennel my terriers with anything else they have to have en-suite pads far to grumpy to kennel with pups. i do find seperate but next door to another dog so they get company but they are on there own to not as much seperation anxiety

all depends on the older dogs nature,it could be a good thing or end in tears as the puppy will pester the life out the older :hmm: if you could trust the elder dog well they wont be a problem, gives the pup company and would keep it quite in the kennel, hope you make the correct decision..atb wullie

They are both lurchers.

The older dog is spot on, he lets the pup crawl all over him i have never seen him be aggresive toward another dog.

I watched them carefully for a couple of days then put them in together.

The pup has quietend down a fair bit.

My original post was'nt really about wether i could trust the older dog i was thinking more about training.

I have taken on board whats been said.

the answer seems obvious now, kenneled together but trained along.

Cheers Gents.
