Could i get a .243?

Recommended Posts

I have recently been granted a .17 hmr rifle, I'v been using the gun for around 7 months. Using the .17 on my permision I noticed i couldnt get the distance to kill foxes (over 100 yards) and latley i have gained permision where there is a few deer. So i have been reading up a lot on centerfire rifles, i am intreseted in the .243 as its a very popular gun an can be used for both foxes and deer. I have just turned 16 and i'm wondering if any one could tell me if i would be able to obtain a centrefire rifle and if so what would be a reliable first gun for me too purchase i would be willing to spend up to £600

Any help will be very helpfull :) thanks!

I am certainly not the most experienced member os this site, but seeing as no one else has replied I'll give it a shot. Firstly, there's no harm in trying. Maybe give your FEO a call before sending the form in to save a wasted £25. Sounds like you have a good chance assuming your department is reasonable though.

The best way would be to find a mentor to go out with you a few times and vouch for you. Should be easier seeing as you have the permission for it.

Good luck and hopefully somoneone more experienced can chim in

That's pretty much the way...your age is against you but apparently you already have a FAC so that's a plus.

A .243 is a powerful tool and very few are granted one these days without a mentor, especially for deer.

If you have the reason and need then you must have a chance, but I suspect the best way forward is to talk to your FEO and get his opinion!

Normally a mentor can be anyone with a centrefire (ideally deer legal if that's what you're going for) on a open ticket.

I have mentoring on my ticket and it just says that I must be accompanied by an experienced centrefire user, it doesn't stipulate a name even though my variation went in with a letter from my chosen person

does it say how long this mentoring has to last - or is it indefinte/until you apply for a change?

There is NO FIXED detail on times or experience. Each region will put it's own interpretation on it.

My region sort of suggests 6 months and 6 deer (MINIMUM) for deer mentoring, but, as long as the mentor and shooter present a good enough case then jobs a goodun  !
