Malt 379
My 12 month old beddy whippet is off to the vet in the morning to have his dew claws removed. He spit one right open on Friday night, and after keeping it clean & wrapped for the weekend, it didn't look like it was getting better, so I took him to the vet this morning. I'm a bit pissed TBH, I took him to the same vets when he was 12 weeks old and asked for it to be done then, but they refused. I saw a different surgeon this time, and they suggested taking both off to remedy & prevent a repeat. I'm gutted, he'd just started to come together on the lamp, & now I wont be able to carry on with his training for a few weeks. Has anybody had to have this done to an older dog, and if so how much of a lay off will he have to have?
Hannah4181 260
I had my bitches dew claws removed at about 18 mths. She was completely healed and out again after 10 days, once the stitches had come out. I will add that she isn't a lurcher and doesn't work, but she is a complete nut case, Dalmation X Bearded Collie, when chasing balls at 100mph she skids and twists the same as a dog coursing a rabbit. Hope he makes a quick recovery. I tried at the time and got knocked back by the vet. i had an adult done £40.how much did you get charged? That was cheap. I paid £107.64, that included the anaesthetic, the op, antibiotics due to an infection, a course of painkillers, and the consultation fee for taking him there yesterday. Malt 379
Update: He's had his stitches out this morning, and chased a few crows on the way home through a field without any problems. It doesn't seem to be bothering him, it hasn't stopped him jumping the stair gates in the house and the back wall anyway! I think I'll do a bit of light ball work with him over the next week or so, he's goes mad for a chucked ball and I think it will give him an opportunity to get used to chasing something now he's minus the dew claws. It'll be very light work though to start with. having my 2 year old whippet/lurcher done this tuesday always given trouble cost €100 for both .bit sick to hear could be 3/4 weeks out of action. jakie Once it's done, it's done mate. Guest it's all my land after 12
Had my old dog "Alfie's" due claws done way back and he was off work for 5 or 6 weeks then back to the graft and he never had another night off with "dew claw trouble" The time off after the operation won't compare with with all the potential time your dog WOULD have had off with continual dew claw injuries , rest assured you have made the best decision (the one your dog deserves) now enjoy plenty of dew claw injury free lamping .
