17 rem or 22-250 or 233 wssm

Recommended Posts

Hi, what do you lads think about a .243 for foxes?

I would personally not buy a .243 specifically for foxes, having said that, if I already had one and NO other suitable tool then a 58g V-Max is very effective, actually it is very effective whatever other calibre you have.

As a first gun you say..... i'd steer clear of the .17 rem, and the 22-250...!!!!! what are you looking for the said rifle to do.... whats its primary use...?

if foxing.... i'd go .223, proven, popular, accurate, cheap factory ammo to cut your teeth on....

As a bunny gun.... no.... i'd go for a cheap and cheerful .22lr

and get a .223 for foxing long range bunny fun.

think of what you need it most to do and take it from there.... 22-250 will be an expensive bunny gun, and you won't get any benifit of meat, bar for ferrets.....lol

i agree as long as you can show good reason then there shouldnt be a problem getting centrefire 1st time round.

my dad got a 222 1st time of asking. muntjac, fox and vermin on it

Why don't you consider .222? Great on foxes and low on powder so ecomomical enough to use regularly on rabbits.

:gunsmilie: Owed and used 17 rem for about 10 years Tikka M55 ,yes there is a few problems like barrel fouling after 15 rounds or so expensive round to purchase and sometime difficult to get a hold of, only good for 250-300 yards, bullet expansion. On the plus side if zeroed at 200 yards it is only 1/2inch high at 100 yards, very fast lock up time, low recoil and very accurate and drift I didn't find a problem out to 150 yards. Have used a Ruger MK1 22-250 and yes very good for foxes but rabbits no unless you have half an hour to pick up what is left. But very noisey. What about a 22 hornet, cheap to reload, moderated very well, no barrel problems, can be reloads to make a subsonic load for rabbit or a litte screamer for foxes which is go for about 180yards :hunter:

hi i dont no which rifle to go for out of these 17 rem. 22-250 or 223 wssm it is my first application so if any one can help me please do

I seem to remember Hornets having some sort of feed problems, hense the Hornet K. They can be fiddle to reload too, thin necks.

Well:

I have been where you are right now, started with a .223 because I new I would get the FAC variation, it's a good cartridge however this

is one centrefire that uses small rifle primers, most common others (including the 22.250) use large rifle primers. I started reloading at about the

same time and then got a .270 for Deer, so I changed to a 22.250 for Fox at the same time.

To be honest it's the Rifle and Scope that make the difference between OK and Oh Dear VERY Good! Not the cartridge, But now I have a few years on the

clock, and 1,000's of rounds my opinion is that the 22.250 is unbeatable for Fox, at the very least all the components are abundant and varied, it's hot

but not silly, I have a Ruger No1 Varmint with a Leupold VX3 6,5>20x50 LRT on top, no moderater, loud, very accurate, and no runners in over 15 years, says it all?

Hornet has no feed issues, reloading is fine too. Lovely little round.
