I think a lot of people jump on the "hardest is a January Hare" bandwagon cos it sounds good. This might have been the case in the past when you had right bad winters and come January, only the fittest best hares survived. But alas, these winters are long gone. Not only is the survival rate from bad weather improved, so has farming methods. Crops that previously couldn't be grown in the winter are now thanks to polythene etc. So not only is the winters milder but an adequate food source is available too. Farmers use straw to cover carrots, turnips, potatos etc to prevent ground frost. Excellent bedding for said hare as well as a food source. Naaa I reckon a winter hare is leaner and fitter (wont be breeding although you do get leverets in winter) compared to its summer compadre but to pin point January as the tougest time hmmmmmm got my doubts......

not the above, bring me a top coursing fen dog and i will produce it 4 hares and it wont retreave 1 in november, and mine will retreave 2,all on my permision up here,

day after we will go on my permision on the fens do the same and both dogs will catch for sure :clapper: mine will retreave 3

so that states the fens isnt the hardest :D and no saluki here just old plain lurcher xs

Too true mate... you do realise I was joking with the fen bit right? Fen dogs are plodders but since that's plodder country they do fine.... Give me a quick but something with stamina but most important a f*****g brain type of lurcher anytime....

its a fact this fen hare and fen dog thing is all made up by a bunch of puppy sellers there is nothing special about these dogs or the fens

Not so sure about that. I agree that money, like most things, has ruined many a sport. I've heard rumours about fen dogs using performance enhancing drugs etc. Which you've got ask yourself, why??? Money of course. Same with pups... But this isn't just a fen problem. One of the most famous puppy peddlers is a collie cross dealer by the name of Hancock and yet some people swear by them even though the rate of pups he produces can't be nothing more than produced from nothing more than pets. So......
