Hard Ground

Recommended Posts

its like this i have been out at least three times a week on the bunnies ect lamping and day time ...iam lucky some of the ground i go on never seems to dry out completely.. or theres thick heavy grass to run on ......but i will travel to these spots ......but i wont travel anywhere to run on hard ground if you get my meaning ...like some do knowing its rock hard ..... now i have traveled along way on peoples say so.. that the ground is ok to run ...and after a 2 1/2 hour journey somtimes longer ..ive got there and its hard ....then i have risked a run or two ..who hasnt ..its hard not to. :D .....espeacily when you start walking looking for that certain field that isnt as hard as the others ... :clapper: ..and then bang old leporus jumps out of a sit .....you try hanging onto that slip....its ney on impossible :D ...i suppose the moto is ....minimise the possabilty of injury ......

if the dogs been worked properly then its feet and pads etc will be ok to run on dry ground ,big diffrence from hard ground and frost ,to many wait for the so called perfect conditions then wonder why dogs feet are to soft ,walking on the road is ok but there is a big diffrence between walking and running ,keeping them running even if just a few chases a week building them up stops also the dog over hunting as this can lead to the dog bursting up by running to eager ,the joys haha

do you mean to say ,if the ground was hard ,all animals that hunt for food would starve because they would not hunt  your dog will know how hard or not to run ,it is bred into them .get them out .

I have a little more respect for my dogs and run them on ground i see fit to run them on. Whats the point in getting them out and running them on ground like concrete and them have them laid up for months??.

A dog may not pick up an injury straight away on hard ground but it will have an effect on it long term that is for sure. I saw two dogs last week that had injuries from running on hard ground, one had a broken toe and the other had broke a bone in it's foot (this was a 1st X bull greyhound). It's going to be at least 5 weeks before these dogs see anything again is it really worth putting your dogs through this them having nothing to take out????

I'm quite fortunate as i have grassland and recently drilled fields i can get the dogs out on.

I can honestly say I've never had a serious injury on hard ground...we ran some pretty inhospitable bits too....with big divots made by tractors on old factory ground, flinty etc.....all the stopper injuries I've had have been caused by broken glass. As for wrists again the worst one was cause by stumbling on a rabbit burrow on sandy ground ;)

undisputed when you course on big land thats dried out open and windy you soon see what happens to dogs that can stay on for 2 to 3 minutes mate even with good feet on them some times you get lucky others lame and then we get rain and the good dogs lame and there lots of game to sell or feed the poor lol, ill run my old dogs any were but not the young guns to much untill i see what they are about ,e and they need to learn which they have , hard ground never stopped me if the dollar was there but ive had five dogs at one time to choose from when the were running 4 nites and more a week if the weather was [bANNED TEXT] mate touch wood never had much trouble with feet odd broken nail and barb wire thtas about it , cheers

that is what makes my dogs and me different to most ,we get used to it ,and keep on going .and i have great respect for my dogs ,that is why they are all brought up from day one to learn how to cope with what ever comes their way .i dont pick my ground or my nights ,i cant afford to , if i did i would have to get a job and only run them on weekends with every body else .

lol. Hope your not implying i only run my dogs at weekends. CP was down last week and we were out 3 nights on the trot. I'm out at least 2 days a week ferreting and 2-3 nights lamping. But the difference with me is i try and look after the dogs afterall there with me for life, The last one that died here was still working at 9 years old. Anyone who's seen my dogs will tell you they are always fit and ready to go. I just don't see the point in running them on ground thats like concrete when i don't have to. But having said that i work for a living to pay for all of those who can't be bothered too.

I can't fault you mate if i could get along without working i would, there's nothing i like more than being out with the dogs. I'd be out every minute of the day if i could. Either with the labrador or the whippets. I only take a few jobs on a week through the winter months, just enough to keep my head above water, the rest of the time i'm out with the dogs, either on shoots or ferreting/lamping. I live for the dogs my lass will tell you that as i alwasy put them first even before her!!!. Like tonight i was taking her out for a meal, but the winds up her so i've decided to have a night out on the lamp to get Vixen ready for her heat in the lamping comp later in the month.
