Lamping with the Brother in law and his mate

Recommended Posts

I took my new brother in law and a mate of his out for their first time lamping last night. Neither are real 'outdoorsie' types but have had the odd rabbit off me before and were interested in where it all comes from  We arrived at the venue with enough light to do some target practice and go through the safety side of things. Their grouping was better than expected but the feckin CCI subs i'm trying to use up made the bolt stiff as hell making cycling new rounds difficult for them to get the hang of.

The weather was very mild with very little cloud no wind and a three quater moon so not the best conditions and it made the rabbits very flighty. Things didn't get off to a great start - the guys were a bit too slow to take the shot, especially when the rabbits run from the field and pause at the edge of cover despite my 'gentle encouragement' :wallbash::laugh: A few 40 yard sitters were also missd and confidance was getting a little low so I swapped my full-bore for the rimmy and bagged two just so they'd have something to take home and show them how easy it was :whistling: My bro then nailed a rabbit through the head at a good 70 yards with his next shot and after that they both seemed to get into the swing of things shooting several each.

I saw some eyes at the egde of a field near where the farmer keeps hens and turkeys and got one of the guys to hold the lamp while i put the full-bore on the sticks and controlled the light switch... I couldn't find my foxcall so improvised with an embarrassing wet-palm attempt that sounded more like a sloppy kiss you'd get from your granny. The fox bought the deception and came running in and I shot through the chest at 60 yards with the 6.5x55. That cheered them right up :gunsmilie: The exit wound out the back end of the fox turned into a talking point so I gave them a basic explanation of terminal ballistics back in the car.

All in all it was a good trip out - 11 rabbits (7 good eaters) and 1 fox.

Not far off mate - According to the farmer the bugger had had a few chicken takeaways from the hen-house and was looking to up-grade to turkeys…. 140 grains of hot lead didn’t agree with him though
