The tories often get the blame for the destruction of british industry in the 1980's, but actually, it was the Labour governments of the 1970's that killed british industry.

Anyone remember the 70's on here? Strikes, walkouts, strikes, inflation, strikes, walkouts, strikes, power cuts, fuel shortages, strikes..........................................

And then along came a strong, no, ruthless, woman who set out to change the way we do things. She admitted that it was going to be an expensive prescription, and even she had no idea just how expensive it was going to be.........

Lets not forget some of the good stuff that came out of the Tory era of the 1980's...

  • Council tennants given the right to buy their homes at discounted rates
  • Nationalised businesses (BT, BG etc) handed over to the people
  • Personal taxation at it's lowest level since the war
  • Inflation kept under control

It's very sad that the price of all this was our beloved coal industry, but somehow, the unions had to be brought under control - they were killing this country.

As for what a new conservative government would do about the hunting act, I'm pretty sure they do not need to vote on repealing some unworkable legislation, and there are always 'ways around' problems.

One thing is for sure; whatever you think of Maggie, and what she did, she would never have allowed such an unfair piece of legislation as the hunting act to slide through parliament.

There is only one political party that has pledged to repeal the act, and anyone who hunts should remember that.

Oh, and by the way, you fascists that vote BNP should be aware that they are ANTI hunting!!

Someone with sense! I remember well the winter of discontent in the 70's under Labour power.

It shows how far the country has been ground into the ground when people who have never worked are sat driving cars under 3yrs old, watching plasma tv's, wearing designer clothes and dressing there half dozen kids in designer gear too, whilst the working man in this country struggles to pay for essentials. Somethings not right there, is it?

Yes, but at least the low paid working man can afford to pay his bills and have a half decent standard if living since the introduction of the minimum wage & the tax credit system. Credit where credit's due, they did do some things right...

Malts, I hate to break it to you, but the tax credit system is just another name for 'Family Credit' which was 'rebranded' by new labour!

It's those same low paid working men that now own their own homes thanks to the tories.

As I said in the original post, not everything done by the tories was good (by a long way), but at least they had principles, unlike the current shower of shit, who are all frauds.

Poverty has actually increased under new labour, and while we are at it, they have done jack shit for british industry (just look at LDV who needed a guarantee of 15 million to bring their new product into production - the 'fake' socialists decided it wasn't worth it, and would rather spend out 50+ million on retraining all those skilled workers so that they can sell burgers or do something else important for society).

The decline of our once proud British industry began long before Labour came in to power Matt, I feel the unions & the Tories should both share the blame for that, it's all about opinions! ;)

....and as I've said in answer to a previous post of yours on the subject, the 'Right to buy' scheme was a double edged sword. Not many of the people who bought their council houses under the scheme actually stayed in them, they sold them on for a vast profit and put the housing market way out of the reach of first time buyers. There is also now a chronic shortage of social housing in certain areas, like mine because no plans were put into place for more to replace the sold ones.

Don't worry though, I'm not going to burst into a verse of 'The red flag' or anything, I've had enough of this shower the same as the next man. There's no one party that suits what I'd call a political ideal, as I'm sure it is with most folk. We've just got to deal with it I suppose! :D

(..or emigrate! :D)

To all the people who point out the failings of the last conservative government think on this, labour have had twelve years to rectify them and have failed miserably.

Remember their signature, tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime, my arse.

Maltenby, you talk of lack of council housing due to the right to buy policy, how many council houses have labour built in the last twelve years?. Add to that there would not be the same shortage if labour hadn't adopted the come on in everyones welcome immigration policy.

I could go on the list is endless, the tories are far from perfect but I'll take them over this shower anyday, as for Thatcher, at least she looked you in the eye and shafted you, this lot just expect you to bend over.

Remember the promise of an EU vote, a blatant bare faced lie.

I'll finish on the council tax, the majority of economists agree it was actually a far fairer method of taxation than the council tax we have now.

Who took us into the EU in the first place?

We could go on.... :D

I tell you what, I'll change all of my political views and feelings because of one unjust piece of legislation shall I?

I won't be voting Labour in the next election, but I'll be f**ked if I vote Tory either!

People are entitled to have a different view with regards to politics, it's one of the last freedoms we have left. Granted, not a lot to choose from in real terms, but at least they don't hold a gun to your head and tell you who to vote for.. (yet!)

Malts, you have every right to your opinions, and how you vote is between you and the ballot box. We may live in a fecked up country, but one thing we can all be proud of is our freedom to vote for whoever we want.

Oh, and the tories didn't take us into the EU, it was a 'Common Market' then, not a 'superstate'. Anyone heard about TB becoming the new EU president? Frightening...........

Personally, I trust none of them. My 'gut' politics may well be just to the right of Ghengis Khan, but Cameron represents the best of a bad lot in my mind.

One thing is for sure; New Labour do not represent the 'working man' anymore, and haven't since '97. They are all throwing themselves at 'Mondeo Man' or whatever tag they are going to put onto the 'middle england' vote this time around. Anyone who votes Labour thinking that they represent the working classes is fooling themselves.

I'd never vote for a party just because 'I always have', or 'I come from a labour/tory/liberal family'. I cannot understand that mentality myself, people should develop their own opinions. My father was a communist, and my mother's politics are unknown. I suspect I am the only 'blue' voter in my family.

When we get nearer the time, it would be interesting to do a poll on here and see which way the majority of THL members will vote.

Interesting thread, with some good opinions............

YES,this is what im trying to say malt, theyre all the same, they run the country the way they see fit all the governments bring out things that piss us off, they cant please all of the people all of the time but no matter what they throw at us were still here, getting on with life, but one thing that is missing is the freedom to hunt with my dogs and like ive said before thats what its all about,il never forget what those b*****ds did, they took away my freedom and they had no fecking right  this may be trivial to the majority of the population but to me it was fecking devastating
