Another season another tragedy

R.I.P Maggie & R.I.P Tammy !!

As hunt terrier man you have to deal with loss well and get on with it, as the next time out is only a couple of days away.

The beginning of last season (2008/2009)while out on a new piece of ground we were thinning out with three of our terriers and 4 guns and a lurcher, we had accounted for 2 already :gunsmilie: when the lurcher marked a bottom of a hedge, 2 terriers running loose had ben seen enter when i got there a couple of mins later i could here bumping and whining, then dad got there and got ontop the hedge in the undergrowth and started looking for the source of the bumping, i heard him shout over quite worried, he had uncovered an open mine shaft which was flooded and both dogs were in the water about 10-12 feet below us :icon_eek: the shaft edges looked crumbly and we all started to panic as to how to get the dogs out??! we all started looking for some way to get maggie and tammy from their watery trap! some rope was found a rotten length about 4 foot and some twine about 8 foot we tied a noose in it and me and my digging pertner daniel precariously started to try and hook the dogs out, straight away i managed to hook tammy, dad had given up hope after 20 mins about getting maggie out and was going to jump in, we pursuaded him not to a and we kept trying to no avail to hook maggie out but in the end after 30mins or so in the freezing cold dark water she gave up and i watched her roll under, we kept going and managed to lift her limp body out about 5 mins later.

That was a massive blow to us as she was not only a great little worker but she was as faithfull as dogs get and great with my little lad, a proper jack russell in nature and looks even though half lakie.

Tammy was well shaken but was needed 3 days later and she was fine, goes to show how tough skinned patterdales are.

all last season she performed excellent working just as we wanted and was 110%

Then disaster strikes again!

We were out autumn trail hunting :clapper: and hounds found a real trail in a thick overgrown lane, the huntsman signalled to loose a terrier and good old honest Tammy was un coupled, she found the fox straight away and it came out of cover with Tam 5 feet behind and went in a rabbit hole in the hedge the hounds were screaming down towards us as dad pushed into the cover the fox bolted below him straight into the hounds with Tammy again a couple of feet behind and she went straight into the scrum and got chopped by a big dog hound!!:wallbash:

we rushed her to the vets but she was dead before we got there, another massive blow as she had become our only reliable dog.

we had gotten two pups last year one patt bitch and one jack dog now, also another dog from my breeding had come back a 2 year old lakie/patt whos not seen any earth work as hes been working with a local beagle/shooting pack runing with them, these all now have to be thrown into the deep end and see what they re made of.

i hope they all work as the breeding is right in all of them, other wise we will be stuck!!

sorry for going on abit and being slightly morbid but it needed sharing, ill try n get some pics up if i can figure it out!

cheers, oligallery_21030_2664_9587.jpg

Guest ROUGH COATED

Same happend to me and a friend 2008 round an old quarry' Russell bitch had fallen down a concrete well we could'nt find her anywhere untill my pal noticed one of the lurcher's marking the well' When we had a look the bitch was swimming round in circle's' we found some of that blue rope and done the same thing and got her out the bitch was freezing cold so we wraped her in a coat and back to car with the heater's on full blast we was very lucky to get her out '

All the best with your TERRIERS

Thats bad luck mate, only thing I can't understand is why you would have terriers running free if you didn't know the ground you were working. I'd have thought it best to walk the ground & look for spots they shouldn't i.e setts, old mine workings etc. Sorry for your loss though, nearly as bad as having a dog stolen :(

god thats sad. to have to watch the dog like that, god knows what the best thing to do would be, but at least you got one back. and that one lived on for a while longer, not a good way to go - bitten by a teammate like that. but at least you didnt lose them both down the well, i think that would tear me up badly.
