WHATS A FLIRT STICK THNKS

The ones I've seen are poles with a furry thing on the end. The furry bit is then dragged along the floor (around the user). It can be used to mimic small prey and looks quite effective (to me anyway).

I took my 26 week old bitch out lamping the other night. She watched her mother catch and retreive a couple and just seemed to know instantly the object of the exercise. She started off very playful with the older dog, but once she saw what was going on became a different bitch. In another thread Chalk Warren seemed to think that her prey drive was kicking in and he was right.

WHATS A FLIRT STICK THNKS

As has been said, a flirt stick works on the same principle as a lure. I use a horse lunge whip with a piece of rabbit skin attached to the end. All my dogs are worked on this, mainly as a fitness exercise. I have had nothing but positive results using it, however my dogs are pets which work as well. The are not exclusively working dogs out a few nights a week. IMO flirting is an excellent all round exercise for any dog, with my lurcher i used it as a pup and as soon as he caught it, i called him into me . . . . thus teaching his retrieve. Although only 16 mths now and just starting on the lamp, his retrieve is spot on with caught rabbits.

Everyone has different ways of teaching pups and i'm not stating that a flirt stick will increase your dogs prey drive, but i do think it can have a lot of positives.

The only thing i will say is, if you are going to try your pup flirting . . . please introduce him slowly and build him up in terms of time. It is an extremely intense exercise for dogs and really takes it out of them. My bitch can run with the horses for 9/10 miles no worries and still be ready for more . . . . .10 minutes flirting and she's done.

Use it little and often 2/3 mins to start with, and use your common sense, do not ruin your pup with over exercise. ;)

I made a flirt pole last night. It consists of the butt of an old fishing rod and a light weight dummy with a rabbit skin on it. After three minutes the pup is really blowing and it looks (to me) like great practice for the field.

What you do is get a live hedgehog & sew a rabbit skin on to it...tie the hedge hog to the dogs back leg with an elastic band and everytime the dog trys to shake it of it pings back and jags it on the ass. Drives the dog nuts and makes them keen as hell...never fails :whistling:
