driller killer 33
Hello, I am new to lurchers but not to dogs, my old bitch of 14 (mostly collie) passed away a few months back, R.I.P Newt. It has come the time to get a new hound, and as i enjoy ferreting me and the family would love a small lurcher. Would mainly be used for ferreting and mooching with maybe the occasional bit of lamping. Would be a worker as well as a well loved family pet, have a 3yr old son. I was looking for a either 1/4 beddy or collie x whippet, as want a smaller dog. but a few people have suggested a first cross. Needs to be rough/broken coat but would not be adverse to a couple other things in there, needs to be a bitch also. Does anyone have any suggestions/opinions about 1st crosses or less?? Also i would love to see some pics of any ones crosses 1st x or less. If any one has any litters now or in the near future nearish the south west please give us a pm. Many thanks for any help. Mines 24 tts the little one is 21 tts, now I'm more than happy with mine, he suits me well, but did I want something smaller, if would be his son. and he sounds like the sort of dog you are after, but not for sale lol. Not much help, but at least theres a pic lol Quote Link to post

So if my maths is right (probably not) you dog would be 1/3 sight hound? or have i got that wrong? A bit of grey is fine, like i said not too strict what im after. If its not a pain do you have any action/side on shots of the dogs? Look just what im after though, both of them. Just tried to work out what % the other dog is, tried my home brew barley wine tonight so bit beyond me at the moment. How well do they both do after rabbits? Dont think i mentioned that is all i will be after. Cheers paid, some gorgeous hounds there, i would be very pleased with either of them, bet ya proud. Neil Quote Link to post
Paid 935
No action shots of the little lad, as I've only seen him on the lamp, mines more of a ferreting dog, with some lamping, so have a couple of action shots of him Both do ok on the rabbits Mines 5/8 sight hound, but quite a heavy set dog. Suits all my needs just right. Quote Link to post

With ferreting who would you say had the advantage? your dog or the little dog? and i which ways do they work differently, sorry for all the questions. Lovely looking boy there by the way, im jelous. The blue eye, got a mate who knows dogs well and he dont trust dogs with, cant remember if its just 1 blue eye or 2, thinks they can be a bit scatty/mad, any opinion?? I dont really have any experiance so no opinion. Cheers Neil Quote Link to post
Paid 935
The little dog, having more whippet in, is more explosive from a stand still, which can be an advantage when ferreting, but is a bit scatty, mine is a little more steady, but I've def ferreted with steadier dogs, which is also an advantage when ferreting. I think the little bit of collie helps there. The beddy part of him is more head strong. He tends to look at you from the wall eye when he is being a little sh!t and pushing his luck, and from the darker eye when he wants something so your mate might be onto something I feel it gives him character though, and I like that in a dog. I'm fairly new to this game and only been doing it 4 or 5 years now, so theres others out there with more knowledge than me about what might suit you. All I know is he does well for me, and I'm happy with him. Edited September 28, 2009 by Paid Quote Link to post

All I know is he does well for me, and I'm happy with him. It sure does give him caracter! Merles have got to be my favorite markings, and i like the blue eyes, It might just be the look of the eyes putting my mate off, it can give them a bit of a sinister edge, which i like. I didnt know they were called wall eyes! but i do like collies, by last dog was mostly collie, and she was too clever for her on good sometimes. A bit of beddy or a bit of collie or a bit of both seems the way, but if i could find a rough coated merle bitch i think i will be sold. So your dogs just over half sighthound, i would have thought he would have looked less racey, i dissmissed first x's for this reason, but after chatting to some bloke about it and him suggesting first x's thought i had better do a bit of homework. This will be my first lurcher so excuse my ignorance Cheer paid Quote Link to post

Paid 935
I was in the same position as you when I started Neil, beddy cross or collie cross ? so when Blues litter came up It was problem solved for me an I would recommend this cross, a bit of both. They do come up fairly oftern, and a few others on here run this cross and seem happy with them. Good luck with what ever you choose, you won't look back mate. Quote Link to post

I do fancy something along those lines, am keeping an eye out. The brain of the collie and the 'up for it' of the beddy. Like the rough coat, summat like yours, cant beat a merle, they look amazing. I know i shouldnt hold too much on looks but i do like them, im sure one will turn up. Sent ya a pm darencross Cheers Neil Quote Link to post
