license springs to mind...need one for everything else nearly...perhaps a different one for different breeds.would prevent half the idiots getting their scrawney hand on some breeds.

but then would any of us be allowed to keep a lurcher?? i really doubt it

in the old days you'd have to pay x amount for a dog which isn't fair as we wouldn't want a class diversion,, however the license idea is one i agree with as long as it was done fairly and equaly, i would say that you'd need to pass a test with a pass mark before you can own a dog, do a course on canine behaviour and their diet needs etc, maybe do some experience at a dog rescue kennels - help the kennels and learn about dog body language as well as breeds, grooming needs etc

as long as you had a knowledge on dogs, their health, training and basic behaviour then you'd be able to keep a dog

thats how i'd do things but then if everyone knew about behaviour etc i would be out of a job!!

i totally agree with you but your veering toward totalatarism there saying what people can and cant have human rights issues and all that. however i do totally agree that f*ckwits like you describe should not be allowed to own any pets of any kind let alone mans best friend who can do serious damage if incorrectly or left untrained. look what happened with the pitty, great loyal dogs which when trained and socialised properly make great family pets but given the worst rep and banned because of idiots.

i don't think i'm saying what people can and can't have, just that they should have a basic knowledge of dogs before having one, that a pass mark in a test would solve many problems, your not allowed to drive without a license and this is down to safety issues, why not apply a similar system with dog ownership?

i have not stated anything about banning any breed what so ever, i feel banning breeds just gives a false sense of surcurity to the public without actually solving anything, i was heavily involved with trying to prevent the 11 breeds banned in dublin and other areas of ireland,

its not the breed thats the problem its the people who claim to be owners!

It's telling them to piss off and leave me alone but he laugh's at it....

Accident waiting to happen???

Some of the comments are unreal...

"Thats funny, but whats not funny is when they really do bite! My staffy gave me a little love bite once when I was annoying her-nearly crushed my hand-ouch! "

Further to your comments about Retrievers/flatcoats. I read a letter from a vet in one of the broadsheet papers a few years back. He said that of all the breeds brought to him to be sedated, castrated or put down for aggressive bahaviour, Labs were by far the most common. People who live in little ticky-tacky boxes with little ticky-tacky gardens buy a Lab, shut it it up all day, get home and walk it a hundred yards down the road to crap on someone else's front lawn then act all upset when a big, intelligent working dog gets bored and turns nasty. Who wouldn't? If you don't work 'em you'ld better damn well walk 'em!

This was before Rotties and bullXs became popular, but he said that the dogs he saw least were Shepherds, Dobies and Ridge-backs. The point is of course that most, but sadly not all, the folk who buy these big dogs know what they are doing and how to look after them.. After all, the RNIB would hardly prefer Labs for guide dogs if they were innately dangerous.
