Recommended Posts

Hiyas,

Benn having a gab wi the Boyfriend and hes (reluctantly) agreed that when we move house next year hes gunna build me a kennel/run and i can keep a running dog.Pref a lurcher.Just go have a mess with on the bunnies (and things ;) ).

Was just wondering what your views are on the ideal first dog? What mix should i be going for?Age ect i prefrebly want one that already had a decent season.(Havnt got a clue about training.

Mi uncle used to go lamping and kept a lurcher, hawk n ferrerts,But he seems to have disaperred off face of the earth.

So any started tips great accepted ...will just be local runnings for now just to get the feel :yahoo:

24 years old and only just starting out proper :icon_redface:

in my opinion i would steer clear of somthing like a first cross colie /grey, whilst these dogs can be great hunting dogs, and can be easily trained, they can also be hard work at times. also you may be limited in what it can catch especily if you get a slow clody one from a litter.

i would go for a good lurcher to lurcher mating, with a good propotion of sight hound in there make up, of course this is all dependant on what size of dog you want.

if you have somthing medium sized with a short to brocken coat, its obveously going to be easier to to look after . somthing like whippet/grehound with a dash of bedlington or colie but i would keep the sighthound mix high, also your first time sucsess will be better with a quik dog.

what ever you get , give it plenty of exercize good raw food and if your not sure about training look on here, or go to a local training class. :) best of luck TOMO :)

what sort of ground are you running? ive allways been told a dog with high sighthound in running on rough ground like heavy plough etc would have foot problems because they are so fast. the only prob with buying a adult dog is why is the person getting rid of it? would you sell a good dog that ferreted, lamped, obedient, could work in the day, what ever you want of it. even if you think there genuine they may not be,as i found out!!! im not saying that the person whos got the dog for sale is a messer, havnt even looked whos selling it yet. allso are you just going to be mainly taking rabbits and the odd hare, fox or deer were its legal or are they going to be a big part of what your running (obviosly were its legal)? will you be needing it to work with the gun, retreiving game etc? have a look on here what cross people use for what purpose rather than what you fancy. then look for a similar litter cross with the parents doing what you want. just my 2p.

As for the ground..Im gunna look for permission from a local landowner.Dont think they get plouged  i know the cattle is on them in summer.Have no idea regards to winter.

Im hoping the dog will be able to take anything that gets in its way ;) Not too bothered about taking hare or deer..That setting my standards a bit high and i dont think its legal round here

Mainly Bunnie but the odd Charlie would be a bonus esp as Mr Farmer will have prob have lost some chucks

I dont have a gun and wudnt know how to fire one if i tried so no

No ferrets either.Would like it to retirive but not too important.Just mainly to have a messa round with..Everyone needs a hobbie :thumbs-up:

Thanks for sound advice.
