trip to scotland

Recommended Posts

its been a dream of mine for many years to go to scotland to stalk a red stag but financially i couldnt afford it but the opportunity arose through a friend to go and have a crack at one so i dived at the chance. i threw all of my gear into the car and set off for a long drive 11 long hours i was knackered before i got there but full of excitement and expectations. the first stalk of the morning i was looking for a sika stag i was not disappointed i shot a small six pointed sika :clapper: after a good hearty breakfast the evening stalk took me to the hill which nearly killed me just walking up there and i saw a few stags but didnt have the opportunity to shoot one. i walked back down to the meeting point where i was told a stag had been spotted on a different hill and he was with about 50 hinds i had the chance to stalk him the next morning. up at 5am the next morning to get to the hill, when i arrived at the hill the mist was down was my opportunity gone as it didnt look very promising, but the keeper said the mist will lift so we sat and waited while listening to the grouse calling in the background as it lifted we spotted the deer. they were spread all over the hill in small herds. we waited about an hour for the mist to clearand we spotted the stag way out on the hill, the only problem being we were surrounded by hinds and i knew it was going to be a difficult stalk. so we waited till the hinds moved and re-grouped and headed out over the brow of the hill to where the stag was. we followed quietly and slowly till i got to the brow of the hill and expected to see the stag on the other side but as we crawled over the top we saw the stag disappearing over the next brow so we followed on, the same happened again and by then i was absolutely shattered and worst still the mist started to come back down. so we moved quickly on and as we came over the next brow we spooked some hinds and they ran on and spooked the stag into the mist and the keeper said get ready. the stag stopped and looked back so i seized my chance and shot. you could hear the thump of the bullet hit its intended target, but the stag took off into the mist and the keeper said did you shoot the right animal and i said YES i shot the stag. he put doubt in my mind we walked over the brow and there he was lying dead. a fantastic first trip to scotland.
