To rag or not to rag

Recommended Posts

Ok so I have an 8 week old Beddy/whippet, and I was talking to a fella down the pub who said I should be ragging the bitch as much as possible. Personally I want the bitch for day time work with the odd bit of lamping. I'm trying to produce a soft mouthed dog who will retrieve without a fight to get the rabbit off her. I know his dogs and he has had some good hauls but do you think this is a good way to start a pup considering what I want her for????

No need to rag any pup  best option is a ball of screwed up paper get the pup retrieving this first then a rabbit skin rolled up with elastic bands around it to hold it in shape then as the pup grows wrap the skin around a plastic bottle this way you can increase the weight of the dummy by adding water/sand to the bottle. :victory:

i totally agree with the above if you want live to hand dont play tug o war or raggin the pup should give up its catch without fuss although my first lurcher hardly bothered with retrieving balls, dummies etc but every bunny and hare she ever caught was brought back alive if it didnt have a pulse she thought it a waste of her time. i have just took on a 8mth old wheaton x and she retrieves dummies now but she aint my lab or cocker.
