i keep an old line of traveller bred stuff met plummer and hancock and had the craic.

Plummer had good stock down from bodgers stuff but went for the blue merle type i think he missed out myself but there you go i like the old types bred for generations no weakness in them and all natural abillity hunt jump catch and carry types be good to see where this thread goes ATB ;)

Interesting stuff Blacktabs, from what i've read when he got his 'Merle' dog it sounded the end of that line he kept, shame too, as by the sounds of it the only thing the old stuff couldn't do was make the money the collie stuff could, when him and Hancock started a 'Dynasty' :whistling:

There was a dog in Liverpool bred directly out of Woolybear (Merle x Fathom) in the early 80's, Sonny was its name, big ugly brute, had one hell of a reputation, good all round grafter and iron hard, nasty with it too, got out once and killed a Doberman in a local shopping area!

a friend of mine called stat has bred his own lurchers for many years and they offen throw the same type of lurchers...which are very handy tools...and i know it dosn't mean too much but plumber mentions him and his dogs in one of his books.
I have seen one in the flesh and they are a credit to him.Definately would be my choice of lurcher for allround work.atb dell

They sound interesting Moonlighter, as do all the posts on here, thanks for the replies, will be really good to hear more ;)

Dell your not wrong about Beauty and i believe stats line has similar ancestry his stuff i believe comes down from plummers grip bred to Anne powers knorfolk type had one of that litter myself never owned a better type ATB

Boson11 you hit the nail on the head mate they did have a mean streak with strangers as much as other things grip kept the postman in his kennel for a full day when Terry Aherne had him at stud.

The pups i had off him were the same personally i think it was that rage that made them what they were.

Should be a good thread. :good: i too have owned a mick douglas bread dog but lost him as a youngster, was very muhc like a tumbler type i used to own. Now i wouldnt mind starting my own line off lurchers bred from my own stuff, and go for linebreeding however the line would be kept very tight but not too close. :victory: the closest ill be goin will be half brother to half sister and the such likes.but an outcross should happen from tha mating imo. ;) Like the bitch ive kept from my recent pending on her making the grade then i will hopefully line her to a cousin or half brother whether i breed the dam or not within the next few years. Then i would personally outcross to either a greyhound or another bloodline. so hopefully ill be set for a good few years. :clapper::drink:

Theirs my say anyhow. 8) Atb Sniper

Sniper, was that a rangey wheaten coloured dog, a real beauty and if so how long ago? The reason I ask is that a Douglas bred dog was in the Ormskirk area about 20 odd years back, used to see a bloke with it regular on my way to work, walking down Holborn hill, he was always trying to hide (unsuccessfully!) a hare or two. Never did stop to talk dogs, he always looked like he'd bolt if a car pulled up and I was always late! But I did find out the dogs breeding from a mate in the town.

no i think the dog your on about was a deerhoundx  i used to go out with him was he tall lad. yeh most probs the lad i knew. :good:

I have been casting my mind back to another norfolk type lurcher i remember seeing in 81 it was owned by a chap called terry who lived in the village called martin in lincolnshire. My mate knew him well and we had a run out to see him it was a real eye opener as his place was like a car boot even with stuffed lions for sale. The straw coulerd lurcher he had was a cracking looking dog he claimed he had bought it off a lurcher man who knew his stuff and had nothing but praise for him .Wether it was true who he said the dog had come of i dont know .atb dell

Some of the old photos i have got of my mates mick douglas bred lurcher he had in the early 80s you can obviously see that this strain was dominant in some of the well known coursing dogs around.Another breeder of a said strain i used to see advertised a lot in the exchange & mart were lockharts lurchers if any body can remember them.atb dell

My memory also can recall a type that was bred by a lad in penistone s.yorks in the 80s a mixture of collie/grey and deerhound .I saw a few of these run on hares [bANNED TEXT] i used to try and run a coursing club in the late 70s to the mid 80s .This was before their was a big saluki dominance in the lurcher scene. The best one i saw was a bitch called mollie owned by the same lad who had a pied dog out of plummers merle [bANNED TEXT] it was first bred to a greyhound.I found it strange that this bitch was never mentioned in his books as she was an outstanding hare dog.atb dell
