Old lines & strains

With many Lurchers topics on this forum, we read about the 'merits' of many Bull & Saluki lines, if line, or strain are the right words to use, 'family' might be more appropriate for some, so I was wondering....

 

Being in this game for a bit, many of the older books, magazines and even advertisements would always mention dogs of ansestry that had stood the test of time, dogs that had come from generations of 'similar producing' dogs.

 

Minshaw (no controversey please!) and Burrell bred stuff is mentioned a bit and if your fan or foe, both have been around for enough years. Hancock isn't the same IMO as he breeds mostley none related stuff, using different dams to whichever stud he chooses, breeding for the percentage (half or 3/4 etc) and it seems plenty do the same when choosing a potential mating..... But what of family that have been bred, true to type for many a year?

 

Some names that used to come up in the past relating to 'family related' types were Ted Walsh, David James, Mick Douglas, John Bromily, Aubrey Friar etc and Plummer many a time mentions dogs bred around the Welsh borders for years, as does B.V. Fitzgerald.

I've just re-read the article on Highland Foxing in the 1988 Lurcher Journal, by Derry Argue, where he talks about Highland Lurcher x lurcher, 'bred possibly for hundreds of years for the job'! Now was this romance or do such dogs exist and if so who's owning them now (or at least dogs relating to 'em)????

 

So throughout this land, somewhere tucked away, maybe their are lines, strains or simply familys of purpose bred, old 'pedigree unknown' Lurchers..... My question is 'are there', and if so, who's got 'em now????

The only type or strain so to speak that i have come across was a bitch bred by mick douglas in 1980 and the T.Mcphees dogs that ended up down here in s.yorks in the early 90s one wich was the grand dam to my old lurcher bitch i have now.atb dell

i keep an old line of traveller bred stuff met plummer and hancock and had the craic.

Plummer had good stock down from bodgers stuff but went for the blue merle type i think he missed out myself but there you go i like the old types bred for generations no weakness in them and all natural abillity hunt jump catch and carry types be good to see where this thread goes ATB

my mate has stag party stag night strain lurchers and they impress me very much. Fast and very game

a friend of mine called stat has bred his own lurchers for many years and they offen throw the same type of lurchers...which are very handy tools...and i know it dosn't mean too much but plumber mentions him and his dogs in one of his books.

Had a great dog off a guy called Dennis brown, he used to run a boarding kennels in north yorkshire, he had the same line for yrs, and had paintings and photos going back yrs.

he lives in ireland somewere

Yes its the only one i have seen out of his line and she is a very well put together dog with strong feet and a brocken coat.atb dell

Should be a good thread. i too have owned a mick douglas bread dog but lost him as a youngster, was very muhc like a tumbler type i used to own. Now i wouldnt mind starting my own line off lurchers bred from my own stuff, and go for linebreeding however the line would be kept very tight but not too close. the closest ill be goin will be half brother to half sister and the such likes.but an outcross should happen from tha mating imo. Like the bitch ive kept from my recent pending on her making the grade then i will hopefully line her to a cousin or half brother whether i breed the dam or not within the next few years.Then i would personally outcross to either a greyhound or another bloodline. so hopefully ill be set for a good few years.

I know Dennis and he did move to Ireland when the ban came in, I last saw him at a show in Adare outside Limerick and his wife did nt like it over there and they were thinking of coming back, but wether he did I dont know

Sniper, was that a rangey wheaten coloured dog, a real beauty and if so how long ago? The reason I ask is that a Douglas bred dog was in the Ormskirk area about 20 odd years back, used to see a bloke with it regular on my way to work, walking down Holborn hill, he was always trying to hide (unsuccessfully!) a hare or two. Never did stop to talk dogs, he always looked like he'd bolt if a car pulled up and I was always late! But I did find out the dogs breeding from a mate in the town.
