hi all,just a quick question,grtting my first long net[50 yarder] on saturday, some of the joiners on site at work have got some spare wooden dowel knocking around,just wondering what thickness you would suggest,also what length they should be.cheers nellie

Thats what i used till i could afford magmum poles all differnt thickness they where all fine unless they where so thin they snapped when you leaned on them to push them in

10-12mm 1/2" dowel is fine to start out with about 30"high and you'll be on your way

For year we used nothing else but 12mm dowle its light and cheap to buy, I really dont know why more people wont use it now

thanks for the replys guys,i should have been picking my net up in the morning,but the guy im getting it off has let me down again so i will have to wait a bit longer

Been talking to a old chap down the pub who tells me that he always used ash poles as they weren't as easy to snap like hazel due to a higher water content

The only problem with using Ash is that to get long net pegs of the right diameter the wood in the pegs will be mostly sap wood and will not last as long as well seasoned hazel. However puse net pegs made of well seasoned Ash are brilliant to use.
