Wanna be farmer 0
I wouldn't just get a new dog. We would definately phone around a few vets before we chose one. I wouldn't go for the first vet. At 1 am on a Sunday/Monday I wasn't about to start phoning around getting prices for them to open my dog up!!!! Didn't realise it was so important. But for things that can wait a few hours i would definately phone around a few vets.
droid 11
Didn't realise it was so important. But for things that can wait a few hours i would definately phone around a few vets. SS said it was an obstruction. Just how 'important' do you think that is? If you wanna be a farmer you'd better wise up fast, mate, or you'll be the quickest farmer to go bankrupt in recorded history....

jigsaw 11,864
well Im in no position to pay up front 2k for a dogs operation.I dont really care if you dont like me saying so but im struggling to pay the bills etc for the last few months.I dont have a disposable income like some.I take care of my animals to the best I can but at the end of the day its a dog were dealing with here.I work for a vet on a regular basis during the year and they make a damn good living. If I ever need him hes there for me day or night and he doesnt charge insane money either,as it should be.My last lurcher broke his 2 front legs and I rang himto ask if there was a procedure or a hope of him recovering,he told me straight, just put him to sleep. No nonsense, just straight honest advice. Then theres vets in the town that have fancy theaters and receptions and they just hunt the money, the greed factor has kicked in big time with most vets.I understand when people are making money from their animals they are willing to pay big money as they'll make it back but when a bloke comes in with his dog/pet they play emotional blackmail and know they can add on the £.I may not be right but this is my opinion. droid 11
No-one forces people to use vets, or take the expensive option. As long as the vet's honest about the prognosis for the animal, then the decision is with the owner. In that much I agree with jigsaw.

Matt 160
Well, if you own dogs, and respect them for themselves, you make sacrifices if and when you need to. All credit to you SS, it's a pet that obviously means alot to your family, and you've done what you deemed best. I understand that some folks own working dogs that they consider to just be a 'tool', much like a car or electric drill. The problem with the veterinary 'industry' these days is that small practices are simply too unprofitable to survive on their own. Many vets have joined together and formed 'group practices' which are run on strict business lines, and long gone are the days of vets being able to use 'discretion' with bills. Me? I pay out a fortune each month for an elderly horse. Well, that's not strictly true, I pay a fortune each month to keep my wife happy as she loves that elderly horse so much. The dogs? I'd re-mortgage if I had to.

WILF 46,811
Like I said above, yes I could act the tramp and say we haven't got it .................. then what happens at 4 am when I take my Lurcher in if he's had a smash? Can't imagine them being in a rush to help. It's not the vets fault that D.L. are so slow, I don't see why they should be out of pocket to be honest, yes they make plenty I'm sure, but then they have done a good job properly, can't ask for more than that. You are a tramp........but not in that way  No, I get what your saying..if the dog is right then money dont really come into it........plus your lass would have wiped the floor with you
AKA-BRINDLE 879
Had a similar size vets bill at the start of the year to fix bitches knee...had to dig out the credit card to cover it til the insurance company paid up...which they did within a couple of weeks of putting the claim in...(insured with morethan)... a pisser at the time but money well spent! farlap 19
i bow to your devotion to the dog,i honestly couldnt afford to spend even 1/4 of that ammount on my dogs.its a disgrace vets charging that ammount. why is it a disgrace? I just dont get it???? it doesnt look overpriced at 1st glance....why would anyone running a business, employing a number of people, having mega expensive equipment and training and overheads....charge peanuts??? I just dont get it when people moan about vet bills as if vets are robbing them. I regulalry have 4 figure vet bills at the end of the month......if its 3 figurs im laughing! I dont resent it, I have a 1st class vet at my disposal 24 hours a day and I value his many years experience, training and dedication. he also has to make a living out of it, like we all do!!! /when they tell a woman her dog died during the operation when it actually ran out there door and got killed on the road and she was charged £700 and it goes on and on. suggest you report it to the RCVS then...they hve a proceedure for such behaviour and uts unacceptable. thats not the same a making a reasonable fee for saving the dogs life, in the original posting though is it!? Bosun11 537
The main thing is that your little smiley dog will be back to his usual, 'jump all over me' self soon, nowt more important than that! Never easy parting with such an ammount BUT through your 'planning', to do the right thing (insurance), it'll be with you soon i'm sure. Though, gotta ask, was there a charge for that rain forrest they chopped down for the bill! Importantly, you did your homework choosing and trust your vet and that really does ammount to a whole lot. The dog was saved and as importantly, your family was spared a whole lotta grief... I should know 'eh!!! Looking forward to the next instalment of 'kitchen bouncy dog'!!!!
