luckyplum 50
had a long chat yesterday with a chap who had bred a litter of lab/springer xlab pups he had kept back a dog which is now fully grown and looks like a small lab.he says the dog hunts well and had caught pheasents and rabbits in cover. he also says that the bitches out of the same litter are smaller and leaner and work very well also. this had me thinking that with a splash of greyhound/whippet these could be nice alround dogs. anybody out there work anything simular ? Wild_and_Irish 11
I know a colliexlab that catches rabbits in the day time for fun, I even watched her keep 2 in the garden as she killed them like a terrier would do with rats. Quote Link to post

cathunter 8
hi all. got a half dalx 1/4 lab. he's my best dog to date as an all rounder. put him under the heading old dog keeping the blood. good on rabbits, great on finding and baileng cats ond would grab a fox if he got close enough, only my opinion that a gundogxruning dog would make a good all rounder if you get the right mix of genes. thats the way i'n wanting to breed. bird 9,986
a 3/4 greyx lab, would make great lurcher. Some working labs are racey, good nose, stamina, strong, coat, brain. Ive always thought would make better x than a collie, but i think you need as said a 2nd x. A dog with natural retrieve, with 3/4 grey plenty of [speed+guts] to tackle any quarry. plus alot of labs make good guard dogs.and lot calm'er temp than a collie x I really [dont] know why the aint [popular] Quote Link to post
lakeman 12
A friend of mine bred G.W.P. X Greyhound which wern't too bad. smart enough looking merl(ish) coloured. But i don't know how they turned out as adults Quote Link to post
bird 9,986
A friend of mine bred G.W.P. X Greyhound which wern't too bad. smart enough looking merl(ish) coloured. But i don't know how they turned out as adults Ive seen a vid of that x working on here, day time rabbiting and it was a good dog.I think it was a 1x, but i still think a 2nd x of any gun dog, would be a better x. As most carry alot of [heavy] bone, and if you are [trying] to catch anything that its 30-40mph, you need that speed of a 3/4 grey with this type of x. Ive got +had colliexs = 1x and 3/8 they are fast+agile , but alot differnt bone structure to gundog x, thats why you need 3/4 grey x lab. Quote Link to post
luckyplum 50
thanks people for your replys and thoughts about this cross i agree with bird when he questions why this cross is not more popular, i half expected someone to reply and explain why more people don,t work this cross ! along the same lines , another friend who knows more about working dogs than i do often tells the story (after a few tinnys!) of his uncles springer who rather than bolt rabbits for the running dogs caught them them in the cover instead ! my friend always says a spaniel cross would make a great rabbit dog . by the way i work a 10 year old beddie/whippet and her two year old daughter, i hope to post a couple of pictures on the small lurcher thread when my son has shown me how. cheers for now, plum.
