arcticgun 4,548
what you want really depends on the type of land you want to run on - and indeed what sort of hunting you wish to do - which you havent specified. Tell us abit about what you're about and what you are looking to achieve and im sure more info will be forthoming. Personally though I would steer away from a saluki for you first dog - will be hunting rabbits and them bigger ones day and night on land got permision mainly large fields If you live around darlington area mate as your name suggests the fields ain't 'saluki size big' but a salukixgrey first cross may do the trick, I haven't owned a first cross, my bitch is about 7/8 saluki 1/8 grey and shows all the 'saluki traits' a first cross maybe easier to trin, atb richard Quote Link to post

emeera 1
if you really wanted a saluki though you've got to be patient and understanding i think it was arcticgun that refered me to this book , the dog listener by jan fennell , its got loads of good advice , used it to remove the agression and tention between the grey and the jack within only a few weeks everythings sound , its just got loads tips and its a good read , its a must if you want a saluki , specially as your first dog just remember youv got to be calm and understand the dog , there are a bundle of fun and have great characters and are very loyal but i think most hounds are , i find that my saluki dog is very very protective Quote Link to post

arcticgun 4,548
My first was my beddyx, then salukix, both still fairly young, also have a pure saluki pup, to be honest i took to much on in my first year mate, bringing on a beddy pup and a 5 month old saluki x was the worst mistake i have ever made. it has worked out fine now, hence getting mysaluki pup, but my wife & kids chip in with a lot of the exercising as well, if i was starting agan I'd only take on one dog at a time, HTH Richard Edited September 21, 2009 by arcticgun Quote Link to post

artic 595
Like someone has mentioned already on here. Consider ground and game, this day and age there's not much to leagally hunt anymore. The saluki is or can be a reserved, standoffish and difficult dog if you dont have the patience. They, like all dogs from an early age need to be socialised and plenty of it. They are very loyal and infact inteligent hounds so long as you respect the heritage and history of this ancient breed you will have a decent hunting companion. I think the second step will be the breeder. If they feel your not educated enough to take on this breed then they will not allow you to be an owner of one. This usualy happens to saluki breeders who dress them up for showing purposes only!! Ive owned 2 litter brothers in the past, they did well at their best at 3 yrs old. Obviously the choice will be yours, but as a first time dog for hunting then id go for a more easier, trainable type of lurcher, then once your educated enough and i dont mean this in a bad way, then go for something more advanced. Have fun what ever you choose to do. All the best. Quote Link to post
