FIRST TIME FERRETING

Recommended Posts

Yesterday was my first ever ferreting outing, with my to kits, on my new permission. Parked the navara up at the farm around 6:30 and started my walk around the hill to where i was going to start and that was when i found my first mistake, Far to much stuff. I took all my ferreting gear plus my jill and hob and a thought a would take a flask of tea, bottle of juice, water for the ferrets and a peace box with rolls and crisps and had to trek about half mile up and down a hill with this. Fare to say a was knakered lol. As a was walking around the side of the hill a had to dodge a heard of cows and trust there to be another big bull, this guy was a big brown one and even had the gold ring through his nose, a was bricking it :(. Amade it to the first warren alive , there were 8 holes, fresh tracks and droppings just outside so a new rabbits were there, so a tryed my jill first and no hesitation she went straight down. After a couple of mins she popped up out 1 hole then another, but no rabbits. So a put my hob in and the same no rabbits, a was going to put them both in but didnt want to tempt fate so just left it. A went to try a 2 holer just as that the cows plus big bully started coming around so had to evacuate that warren. Next one i was at had four holes so a stuck my wee jill down first and there was nothing for about 10 mins, so a got my new mk3m to test try and a found her staying in same spot about 4ft down, so a went to get a drink of juice to give her another 5 mins when a bunny came out the hole, the noise was like thunder, a dropped everything dived on him and didnt even bother taking him out net to dispatch a done it as quick as a could. YUPPEEE :D First ever bunny in the net and ive not even got any pics because a was that excited to get going i had left my phone in the car, BUGGER. Anyway that was it, I put my hob down another hole and a didnt see anything for about 10 mins, so a got the finder out and he was staying in the same spot, so a marked it with my spade had a cup of tea and he still wasnt out, got the finder and he was still there, S**T. The finder was reading 6ft down, so a started taking the top layer of grass of when the noise must have scared him and out he popped, thank god for that :o . It was a great morning and am counting the minutes till this sunday. HAPPY FERRETING.

maybe there just wasent any rabbits at home, you can normally tell as you'll hear rabbits drumming their back foot as a warning to others, very often we have ferreted warrens that showed all signs of rabbits, yet bolted none, yet other warrens that lookl disused have suprisingly had loads in...

Loads of differnt reasons mate nought at home your kitts weren't going deep enough they where getting the run around .The only way to know for sure is to put a experanced ferret down after your kitts to judge how there doing

you should have put 2 ferrets in if you thought they were running rings round ur ferret

on some burrys we use up to 5 ferrets to get them moving

but on a serios note have you seen the price of gold you should have rugby tackled the bull and got the gold ring :whistling:

anyway at least you got out and got 1

first of many no doubt

Well done Bill :clapper: If you think one ferret is getting the runaround, then stick the other in to back it up, thats what I do, and all the more reason to do so if your jill is staying down, means she's chasing but cant corner the bunnies ;)
