ellir0305 9
i have started making nets recently and i haven't done much due to lack of materials but i have got the basic technique down and a few blisters later i want to make a small stop net/ hare net. so i have a few questions really; how many yards of net would i get out of a 500g spool of 6z if i was knitting 4 1/2" full mesh? is 6z the best material for the application of should i use spun nylon? is the selvedged mesh essential and if so what should i use for that? thanks rob Quote Link to post

Apart from rotting if it's not looked after, it's nice stuff. A 500gm ball will give you about 23 or 24 yards of 4 1/2" ,12 mesh wide rabbit net. I was taught to use 5 1/4" mesh for hares at 16 mesh wide. JBS nets do 4 ply hemp twine for £8.50 a ball. You can make yourself a 50yd rabbit net with 100 yards in it for under £50. You can treat the net with fence paint too. That gloopy stuff . You can buy it cheap just now. Pick a good drying day, then dilute the fence paint with water. Dip the net, then hang up to dry. It stiffens it a bit, though it softens with use. It gives the net a bit of protection against rotting and dyes it too. Hope this helps Rob, ian. Quote Link to post

netrigger 568
Hi, I would rekon that You would get well over 40 yards from a 500grm spool of 6z nylon, adding the Selvedge is an option but it really does make the net handle a lot better. I would personally stay clear of the so called Hemp Twines as all they are is Cheap Flax which are very week in strength. You should drop Molecatcher a pm as I know that he has some very nice Spun Polyester twine in stock which is great for making long nets, Iam actually making one from this twine at the moment and its strong and very fine in size which is an important factor in the making of a long net, and He also has 6z nylon. Give Him a shout and He will sort You out.. Regards.. Quote Link to post
longnetter 32
I think netriggers right, you'd be better of with spun poly or spun nylon 6Z twine must be double knotted and it's murder on your fingers . If I had to make a net from 6Z I'd buy a sheet and cut the net from that (I make and sell loads of purse nets made like this) sounds like cheating (well it is) but it'll work just as well as a hand tied 6Z net atb Quote Link to post
