Binocular Magnification

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a pair of Binoculars and am not sure what magnification to go for. I will be useing them on a grouse moor for scaning hill faces, spoting deer and identifying birds. I think someone told me that 10x40 were good or it could have been 10x50. I'v seen a pair that are somthing stupid like 180x72 is that over kill?

what do you use?

Thanks alot, Tom

i use 8x56 from eschenbach( little known german optics of good quality) they cost around 250 euro.

good choice are steiner, leica, zeiss, optolyth. depending on budget and weight you want to carry.

when stalking i usually have the smaller binos during the day 10x20. a 20x30 telescope is good if you have something to rest it on to get real close up.

as a daytime glass i would opt for the 42,50 mm.

as an all round glass( night time, dawn and dusk) 8x 56 mm will produce a usable light value( pupil size changes with age).

as with most optics budget is the big factor behind usage.

get 10x50s

and dont buy a cheap shitty make, save and get somthing good from steiner, swarovski etc

you want binos that are going to give you the biggest field of view possible at the longest range, but still be able to carry them

im saving for a pair of steiner night hunters look them up on ebay they look old fashioned but theyre prob the best you would want for the hill, and they have wide lenses that mean theyre amazin at grey dark when cheaper binos are worthless

Hi for the hill you want to cut wait trust me so for the normal hill-keeper stalker is 8x30 swarovski slc to spy & a spotting scope to look in detail for stags. Any decent 8x bins will do & 10x is a bit much as the eye can only handle 7x. If they are for in your rover etc then 8x42 would be very line to go down thats what i work but work lighter 8x32 when stalking.
