bullmastiff 615
Went out Friday night to my friends for a bit of lamping again, we were soley after Foxes this time so took the .17HMR and the .243 Got onto the first farm and in the first field we dropped straight on top of a nice size fox. we were close to the farm house so that ruled out the 243 so it was down to the moderated .17 they estimated it at over 150 metres so was a bit too far for the little rifle. tried a squeak but it wouldn't budge, so rather than driving at it and risk scaring it or making it shy we decided to leave it for another day (hopefully next Friday!). We saw one other set of eyes out but they disappeared into the wood as soon as the lamp hit them. They've had trouble with a new guy that shoots at stupid distances on the lamp and misses so has made a lot lamp shy (he's now had his permission revoked I believe) On the next farm, again we pull through the farm yard and straight onto another at the other end of the field, a squeak and it moves in towards us, lamp off and keep squeaking, lamp on and its within range but quickly retreats back towards the hedge. Lamp off and squeak again, lamp on and it's moved in again but crouches this time in the grass. I was looking through the view finder so couldn't see a bloody thing but I was assured it was there, then the tell tail eyes light up again as it peeps over the tuft of grass. Bingo fox Nº 1 in the bag and a dirty old boy he was too! he stank! LOL Next one we came across was near the brow of a hill so not a safe shot but the lads knew which direction it was heading so we whipped through the wood and waited for him to show. Sure enough 5 Min's later as we flicked the light on he was heading across the field in front of us, but as the light hit him he started trotting away from us. We tried a squeak on the WAM to stop him or call him back but he kept going so a couple of loud whistles and he stopped for a second time long enough for a confident shot. It was right at the furthest reach of the beam so a bloody long way, and hard to see on the camera again (you can just see the eyes). I've noticed looking at the Video he doesn't look that big but he was a decent sized Dog fox and in superb condition. His coat was thick and soft and unusually he had virtually no smell to him??? He had a cracking bush on him so we whipped it off as a memento and left him on the gate for the Farmer. We had one more shot with the .17 in behind the farm house but it was missed as the fox moved just as he pulled the trigger lucky bugger. The Video. Try turning the brightness up on your screen, you can see the foxes then (I don't know how to lighten the video?) Even though the Sony Handycam has Night mode, it still struggles with these sorts of distances on the lamp. http://s76.photobucket.com/albums/j14/Luke...3onfoxeswmv.flv I took Roo with me in the car and stopped on the way home just to grab him some dinner, so swung into a private estate I have permission on and let Roo out the window , he quickly caught a Rabbit that squealed like I've never heard before!!! it was so loud it woke half the neighbourhood up I think I'd best use the air rifle next time All the best. bullmastiff 615
Thank you for the comments guys, no the 243 isn't Modded, and yes it is Bloody loud!!!My mate was stood in front of the barrel with the lamp for the second fox so put his finger in his ear, apparently it doesn't help!!! as his ears were ringing for a few minutes. He has a front sight on the barrel and the gunsmith said it would cost a lot to remove it and screw cut the end, so he didn't bother. Thanks again for the comments All the best Luke Quote Link to post
