ERIC.i think you should think long and hard about your miracle hmr,i dont want to pi*s on your parade but iv heard it too many times before about how good the hmr is on foxes.as i have said i stopped shooting foxes with mine and sold it 3 months ago.the hmr is a good bunny gun and thats it,the small17-20 grain bullet does not have enough energy past 100 yds for fox and as for head shooting them past that distance well?any way if your happy all well and good,at least i admit to getting it wrong,and i have moved on from it.

DB, if I've read it right, you are looking for a Fox round as your first centrefire?

 

If so, then I'd say buy a .223 and experiment with ammunition, should do you fine for just about every Fox under 300 yards

if you want a calibre for fox out to 200yds and rabbits a little further then get a .22 Hornet, dont listen to the knockers they are actually gaining in popularity

yeah the hmr's, im guessing your not a fan of them! i personally find them a good round but useless if its windy!

was a fan till i found that many a fox would not play dead when it was shot further than -90yds away.so i stopped shooting foxes with the hmr but if you can kill them at 180yds with the hmr then your a better man than me.i will stick to what i know works in the real world.

 

fair enough each to there own, i tend to use a proper tool for foxes anyhow but you never no when one might pop out! and as for the real world the old man can head shot rabbits at 150 with his sako quad .17hmr(i cant mind) and lots of people can do the same and thats using a leica range finder to record it and they dont normally tell porkys so you put the bullet in the right place on a fox at that distance then it will play dead too!!

 

 

This one seems to be getting very involved, but lets be clear, the effect of a 17HMR on a rabbit and fox at 150 yards is very different, and whilst all my rimfires are specifically listed for FOX on my FAC the .17HMR is the worst of the lot, and not by any stretch of the imagination a calibre to be considered a 150 yard fox tool in my estimation......BUT this thread is about 17 centrefires anyway!!

I think alot of people are getting me wrong as the way i wrote the post wasn't too clever , my .17hmr is for rabbiting but occasionaly whilst out you come across foxes! there not the best tool for the job granted and i use a .222 for foxes but the hmr can in the right hands kill foxes past 100 yards! on the military full bore range are club uses theres blokes that can get 4-5 inch groups with the hmr's back at 300yds weather permitting that is,

hi thank for all your advice so far i think a with give the 17 rem a miss i have heard more bad news then good news about them i have another post up with different cals if you can help me with that its just so i can find the best round for the job in hand

death boy all the bad news about the.17 in any form is usually from those that have never had one dont listen to the armchair experts-any we will put this to bed-whatever calibre you choose do a lot of research and get things right first time.
