.17 remington

Don't go there!

17 Centrefires are the preserve of 'crazy' American Gun Magazine Writers, i.e. Someone else is paying the bills.

To be honest I've never fired one, but I've seen and handled the cartridges, NO WAY, the case is fat and round with this tiny little

'pointy' bullet poking out of the end?

Look get real, buy a .223 if you want a 'small' centrefire, but if you want a 'real one' and you are prepared to learn about reloading get

a 22.250 (Probably the BEST .22 Centrefire in the world).

Notwithstanding the above getting a rifle in .17 Rem would be an uphill task to say the least, however the .223 and 22.250 fill the gun shop gunracks of this fair country to the brim, all the shapes/makes/wood/laminate/ stainless/blue etc etc the choice is yours.

But if you must??? Let me know how you get on.

Andy I think you need to open your mind a bit. 17 Remington is not personally my cup of tea either but some people like them.

I can see merit in the 17 Fireball - good to 200, 250-odd and then dies off quick. All on not much powder - has its uses!

About 22 centrefires, I don't think there is a good or a bad one; they have different uses. Perhaps the 222 is a bit pointless now, but that's about it; the others have their uses. 22-250 is also a small centrefire by your meaning; I am of the opinion that they are there to do a job, so the round should simply be appropriate!

Go with a .17 mate as for starters there not a centrefire and secondly for a rabbiting/foxing round then that fat cased and tiny little bullet does aworth while amount of damage in the right hands, ive shot and seen foxes shot out to 180yds stone dead so that little bullet packs a punch.

the only downside with them for the rabbits is you cant reduce the sonic crack of it, yes theres some good silencers but none of them reduce the noise too much because of the speed of the bullet!

anyway its your choice and listen to people who have used this calibre.

ANDY F what a load of sheite you are talking.as you state youv never fired one and as for the cases being "fat and round"what have you been looking at not the .17 rem case.as for the up hill task thats crap they are just as easy to load for as any other calibre.as you say the gun shops are full of .223 and .22.250 dont that say something and before you go off on one iv had both and still load a 223 for a mate.

ERIC .17 not a centerfire? you also are talking sheite again fat case?where do you get that?and its not the bullet that moderators are used for its for the amount of powder a case burns this is the noisy bit of a gun as for good moderators -well do some research first i have 3 -.17 rifles and all have moderators that reduce the noise level to where i can reduce the rabbit numbers .come on lads put your brains in gear first before you reply to someone wanting help.

yeah ive got my brain in gear mate as i was not talking about The .17 REM. And as for the fat case i was quoting andy.f. the mod reduces the sound on a .17 but you still get the sonic crack of the BULLET! and yes i have quite a few rifles all with mods and have got a bit of experience reloading and shooting so dont tell me im talking sheite!!!!!

Anyone in Staffordshire or Derbyshire own a .17 centrefire. I want to see one in action as im thinking of one for my self. I dont mind travelling but dont really want to go too far.

Any advice you can give me would be appreciated. If noone has one, can you help me out with some advice about the calibre as a rabbiting gun and occasionally a foxing round. All the best

Jay

sorry db thought you were talking about the .17 in general rather than the rem!

ERIC what .17 are you talking about then? i quote"ive shot and seen foxes shot out to 180 yds stone dead"not the magical all killing hmr?

yeah the hmr's, im guessing your not a fan of them! i personally find them a good round but useless if its windy!

was a fan till i found that many a fox would not play dead when it was shot further than 80-90yds away.so i stopped shooting foxes with the hmr but if you can kill them at 180yds with the hmr then your a better man than me.i will stick to what i know works in the real world.

fair enough each to there own, i tend to use a proper tool for foxes anyhow but you never no when one might pop out! and as for the real world the old man can head shot rabbits at 150 with his sako quad .17hmr(i cant mind) and lots of people can do the same and thats using a leica range finder to record it and they dont normally tell porkys so you put the bullet in the right place on a fox at that distance then it will play dead too!!
