death boy 0
Anyone in Staffordshire or Derbyshire own a .17 centrefire. I want to see one in action as im thinking of one for my self. I dont mind travelling but dont really want to go too far. Any advice you can give me would be appreciated. If noone has one, can you help me out with some advice about the calibre as a rabbiting gun and occasionally a foxing round. All the best Jay Quote Link to post

Deker 3,478
There are a couple of .17 centrefires....... They are expensive, noisy, hard to find and of limited use...... I am involved in Game and Vermin Control, I have 7 FAC tools and an assortment of Shotguns but have no requirement for a 17 centrefire! Quote Link to post
HUnter_zero 58
Anyone in Staffordshire or Derbyshire own a .17 centrefire. I want to see one in action as im thinking of one for my self. Jay My mate used to own one, if that's of any help. He used to shoot a .17rem which was bloody fast, bloody loud and bloody lethal. The down sides were that it was expensive to reload, had to be cleaned every ten to fifteen shots and no where near as good as a .22-250 or .243" (loaded with light weight bullets). Apart from that it was much like any other centerfire rifle in action, squeeze the trigger and bang! John Quote Link to post

All the best Jay i would just go with 223 or 22/250 easier to get the componts for. shoots well with factory ammo. and better range with it if needed Quote Link to post
coldweld 65
Keep trying . If you want a .17rem go for it ! Loads of folk will tell you they have tried all the rifles on earth but thats usually not true , and then tell you that their choice is the best . Keep asking someone will have one , choice is what keeps the market going. ATB coldweld Quote Link to post

ezzy6.5 0
As i've posted elsewhere on the site I've used A 17rem for foxes and it will definately kill them, works better with the heavier bullets (25gn) Powder charge is about the same as a 222/223 ( I used 26gns Varget) it is very flat out to 250 but will loose its energy rapidly after that. the amount of rounds it will fire between cleans will vary from rifle to rifle depending on bore condition and velocity. Speeds of 4000fps are possible but expect to clean a fair bit and familiarize yourself with JB paste. Any rabbit shot with a 17rem will be in bits especially at 4000fps (still good fun though) The wind blows them about a fair bit, they are no noisier than a similar sized centrefire, recoil is non existent and even without a mod you can see your shot strike. Your FLO might not let you put it on ticket for rabbits they are very safe (25gn bullets at 4000fps tend not to bounce. If you want one then why not? also look at 17 rem fire ball, some factory rifles available in this calibre now. Ezzy Quote Link to post
death boy 0
thanks for the advice about the 17 i have been thinking about it for a bit now i want a fast round that i can home load and do all legal quarry with thats why i thought the 17 rem. iam debating on a 223 thought hard choice any help thanks jay Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
17 Rem Fireball would be the one I would look at as it is almost as fast as the 17 Rem, but uses less powder so makes the cleaning etc less severe. 17 calibres are issued for rabbits according to HO guidelines. Can't justify it, but I would like to try the 17 Fireball. Quote Link to post
