in your opinion what is the best ferret finder.

i am looking to buy a new ferret finder

. i have a mk1 but i am thinkin about buying a mk3.

answered that yourself really, by using the word "new", you'll only get a new mk3, everything else, mk1/mk2 will be second hand

and if you already have a mk1, is it broken?

if not, save you money and keep using it, if its on its way out, get a mk3, no matter what anyone else's personal prefrence is, with a mk3 you'll get a gurantee anything else and you pay ya money and take a chance

I mentioned this in another thread. I recently switched to the Mk3 when my old Mk1 died on me. Once you remember the search and locate button needs switching ,it's a brilliant bit of kit.

I always swore i would stick with the mk1 but now i am glad i made the change

I have used 2 different MK3's and on both it was always 1ft closer, like you said, So if it says 3ft, I dig very carefully after 1ft.

I think the reason alot of people get confussed with the mk3, is they simply try using it too soon when ferreting, if the ferret is moving, you'll get lights flashing and bleeps all over the place, the locator Is best left in your pocket, untill you havent seen the ferret/s at any holes for a good twenty minutes or longer,

if a ferret has killed under, or got a rabbit/s in a dead end and is not moving, the mk3 is then so simply to use, anyone still not to sure, search utube for deben mk3, theres some good video of how to use it....

I agree with Stubby on that point. If you're working a ground set and the ferrets are working away as they should be - then the locator will be giving all sorts of readings as the ferrets move here and there like subterranean whippets. By the time one beep comes out of the Locator, the ferret could be 2 foot further on! However, if you are working a hedge then the locator is great for keeping an eye on which direction your ferret is heading in, etc.

The reason for the differences in depth readings compared to the actual depth seem to be due to all sorts of real-life variations in battery strength, soil and stone density, etc. However if you find a reading that says 4 foot, don't just dig a 4 foot hole. Dig down a foot or two and check again, and carry on like that. Also don't forget that the reading is the distance to the collar, not to the tunnel. If the ferret is at the bottom of a deep tunnel then it may be 3 foot until you break through, then another foot down to the collar.

And very importantly the lights/readings on the Locator are at fixed intervals - whereas the ferret could be in between. So a reading of 4 foot could be anything between 3'6" and 4'6" in theory.

So if a ferret it 3'6" deep and sitting at the bottom of a tunnel that is 1 foot high then the finder might read 4 foot, wheras when you start digging you will break through after 2'6" of digging.

Hope my diagrams are useful!
