OLD DOG

Recommended Posts

HI out there in hunting land.

i've got and old dog (13 years old) and am not shaw what to breed him to.

i don't want to lose his blood as he has been the my first dog that i hunted with (he is now retired and gets the good life)

he is smart, even to smart for his own good some times, he points(marks), flushes and runs down if he can get the speed up in time(most of the work was in close cover) and retived, he's 22 inch at the shoulder and about 20 to25 kgs.

whould he be to big to put over a whippet bitch or simlar

or should i just try and find some where i can save his wrigglers for a later date for inshurance??????

He might not have any wrigglers left at that age :icon_redface:

Though you ain't put up what the old fella has in him, the old adage would be, 'if in doubt, mate back to greyhound', that way your always playing safe, though you could use that to a certain extent to any pure running dog.

SORRY I POSTED THIS TOPIC TWICE I THINK. he is 1/2 dalmation 1/4 black lab 1/4 pig dog(not shaw of what line) he is dal size and shape. not like his dad size wise (sire was a BIG black solid dog) and his dam was of a show dog line, i knew the sire and dam. he was a good stayer as in running for km's at top speed and could hunt all day. i'm a fan of big running dogs but want to keep the size down in my own line if pos. or should i breed him to a grey just to get pups? or a whippet?or?

quite a mix in there mate ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,whats a pig dog???????????

in oz they can use any dog to hunt pigs i.e. stags(greyx deer, or there abouts) bully x grey. bullarabs(bull x greyx greman short hair pointer mix). mastiff x dane. wolf hound cross, staff cross. kelpie pure or cross healers. wide range of dogs.

but from what i saw of my dogs sire was posible mastiff cross black lab.

The only way i will know is the pups (if they happen) as i know every thing else about his breeding but not the pig dog bit

thanks all. just letting you know, i'm getting his wrigglers fozen on sunday. least then i'll know if he is a viable sire or not (count wise)

and i don't have to worry about finding a bitch asap. thought about it and going to look for a large whippet bitch or a whippt x grey. as my dog has stamina plus and i thought the whippet is quicker in short semi open areas for hunting, and they might average each other out. i'll go for the pups with thicker legs as i hunt over afair bit of ruff ground. and i personaly like the smaller running dogs but they all have there place, sound good?
