what kind of budget?

i would go for a variable, illuminated,as big an objective as possible.

variable will reduce light transmission minimally( against say a 8x56) but will be more versatile when stalking/long distance fox etc

illuminated will help when sitting on for boar at night, often you only have a sillouette to work on and you cannot see the crosshairs.

objective size will let in the little light you often have to make do with( 56mm will do the best night work, you can get bigger but they are expensive)

get the best you can afford is the onlt tip i can give you without a budget, and don't save on the mounts. agood set up will last.a crap one will drive you mad!

if you want to do driven boar then i would reccomend removable mounts and a second scope( you can fit it to the same mount base) ot no or minimal magnification(holo sight etc) 20mm obj will do you.

Oh ho ho ho around 1K aaah you'll have a big selection then, seriously consider Schmidt Bender, I have on of their 6x42 hungarian models on my .17 HMR- seriously good bit of glass,- awesome light transmission and contrast, if you're willing to spend almost all of your budget, then i'd recommend S&B's 3-12x40 or 3-12x50 at £919 and £939 respectively, though if I were buying a new rifle and scope, I'd just stick with 8x56 in either the A4 or A7 reticles, (German type heavy posts @ 3,6 and 9 o'clock and thin wire from 12:00) but then I wouldn't want to afford to spend a grand on a scope (unless it was my profession)! good luck with it!

take a look at zeiss and swarovski as well, I do personally think that the European manufacturers are truly the best with S&B coming in tops in toughness (they make the current issue USMC sniper day scope)

I have several Rifles all with Swarovski's and leupolds but I used a Weaver Extreme Classic 2.5-10 x 56 In the week mounted on a .308 and it was floorless, they come with the german #4 Reticule iluminated reticule 30mm tube and a clean matte finish. £512!!

I have always been very particular with my scopes and would have never considered buying any other scopes than Swarovski's and Leupolds but the Weaver is a very good scope for the money and well ive bought one to put on my Steyr Pro hunter mountain mkII .308

i would in that case go for a s+b,docter, zeiss glass.

depending on whether you stalk alot or more night shooting with or without a lamp( want to keep it light or mount an observatory?)

the big makes offer reliable optics and very good service if something goes wrong. leica also make excellant scopes.
