Another two hours at the Cemy

Took another trip to the Graveyard this evening.

Boy did I get a load of looks from people

I hang a warning sign on the gate for people to see, but it seems to have the effect of drawing a crowd :o

Thought I was gonna be in deep dooodooo today though :o

The Cemetary is just off the A63 road and as I was walking around a couple of girls were stood near the gate  trying to see what the feck I was doing. A few minutes later, I hear the very distinctive sound of Oscar Nine-Nine and at the same time I hear the familiar two tones racing down the 63 oh sh!te :(

What a relief when the helicopter passed westwards and the sirens also carried on their westward direction. Phew! I mean I have my written permission on me, but these are the guy's that shot the guy with the Samuri Sword a few years back (and quite rightly too!).

Anyways, 1st bunny I had to stalk it was about 75yards from me and I had to make a very slow journey across from my sniping and observation post to the central walkway of the yard.

By the time I had got there, bunny was hiding behind a raised grave cover. Patience was the order of the evening  I made my way to the left and got laid out ready to get a bead on bugs. It came into view (or should I say its ears did!). I couldn't get a clear shot unless I wanted to pierce it ears for it! Again I moved to the left a little, bringing the S200 with me.

What seemed an age passed by when ole bugs mooches into a clear view :D .

Problem with this was that it had turned and had its back to me! I wasn't prepared to try and take the shot from the back of the head unless it had been a lot closer to me. The ratio of a clean kill verses a wounded animal was weighted far too much towards the wounding, so I refrained from putting my finger on the trigger.

Patience paid off as the bunny turned side on and stretched its neck to have a munch on some wild flower stalks.

I gently placed my finger on the trigger as I placed the crosshair where I wanted the pellet to land. Phut, followed a microsecond later by a loud Crack.

That was it, lights out for bugs. :clapper:

I retrieved the bunny and laid it out at my sniping point, there was no sign of any others around so as my wife has been complaining about me gutting them at home, I gutted it in the field (as it were). I placed the guts inside a plastic carrier bag for disposal in my bin later.

I got laid out at my post and waited, then something caught my eye from the right. I just saw a shape move from out of the hedge behind me and made its way across the yard. It seemed small and something not quite right with the way it was moving. I got my gun and began a stalk towards where I had seen it. This shot would have to be taken standing as it was an open road behind the bunny.

I got to where I thought I had seen it and there it was not more than 15 feet from me!

It just didn't seem right at all, the bunny looked odd! it seemed to be all skin and bone larger ears than I would have expected and a more elongated head. It was also leaning on the gravestone!

I raised the gun nice and slow and as I got the scope to my eye, it legged it (somewhat awkwardly) towards what I thought was a trough in the ground where they had been digging. I took a few steps towards it, expecting to see it instead I saw an entrance to a warren! This one went down into one of the larger graves and get this, it was less than 15 yards to the right of my sniping position.

I went back and got myself settled again. Less than 5 minutes later I glance at the entrance to the warren at my right and out pops this nice size bunny!

Deffo not the one I had seen enter it.

I placed the crosshair under its ears at about Jaw hieght and gently squeezed the trigger. Barely heard the phut as it left the silencer, the sound was drowned out by the CRACK as lead impacted skull. Bunny just fell over with a couple of shakes of the back legs.

This bunny was in good condition apart from one ear, that has clearly been bitten or torn off! I looked around, no more so I retrieved it.

Got settled again and waited, my eyes wandering from left to right between entrance and the congregation mound at the far end of the yard. Must have been 10 minutes later when I saw under a tree a dark smallish shape. It was obscured partly by twigs and low lying foliage. I brought my gun round and examined the target. I couldnt be sure, but it looked a lot like that little un that went into the warren that the big one had emerged from.

How the ell did it come out without me seeing it if it was that one? It was close(ish) at about 20 yards at the far end of the tree. I placed the crosshairs just below where I wanted to place the pellet (a tricky shot as the bunny was sat 3/4 away from me but I figured I could make the grade given it was so close) and I figured that if I threaded the pellet just right, the twigs would not deflect it away from the impact point I was trying to achieve.

Little squeeze and bunny falls over, no kick no movement. I was immediately taken back to that shot a few weeks ago when a bunny went down without a twitch, then got up and ran! So I quickly made my way to the bunny.

The smell was attrocious  ! I immediately saw where the bunny had come from, another hole from the part of the grave that had collapsed through age.

I took the bunny over to where I had the others but the smell from this one was rotten :bad:

It was ALL fur and Bone, hardly any meat on it at all and a very large lump in its belly!Which when pressed caused the bunny to urinate a very Dark revolting smelly urine.

Any ideas what was wrong with it folks? Is it me or does it look like a young Hare?

Good Wright up :D My uncle shot a rabbit years ago and it didn’t have any ears it looked like a guinea pig. They are very territorial and fight allot. The only explanation I can think off about the smelly rabbit is that it is one of those rotten grave yard zombie rabbits lol. atb John

Excellent right up and a couple of things i could relate to!

One of my permissions is a few fields near a by pass, so i have to be carefull where im shooting and make sure i dont aim towards the roads. The other week, i was walking around when a police car flew past on the by pass. Next minute, a police helicopter is hovering above me as im laying in the field waiting for bunnies to come out. Most unsettling. Luckily, it hovered for a while, then flew off, so whether or not it was after me i dont know!

Secondly, i got 1 bunny the other week, i stalked up on it using some hay bales as cover. It was very close, more than im used to, maybe 20 yards, so i aimed low, shot it, and it squeeled. I legged it over and got it, pulled its neck. Then when i checked, my pellet had actually gone through one ear, out the other side and through the other one! Pierced both its ears!!!!! It must have been the shock or something which startled it, to let me run up and grab it. Quite a strange shot really, never had that happen before!

Yo Phantom, only just seen this, nice going mate, what did the guts look like in the ill bunnie?

It stank so bad, there was NO FECKIN WAY was I gonna open it up :bad:

I did think about it, but after it drew the flies away from the bag of guts I decided against it.

I can still smell it days on and thinking about it is making me wretch :bad:

If I ever get another, I'll seal it a bag and send it to you to open up for me :diablo:

One of the things that got me most was the stench and colour of the Urine. Very dark brown, suggesting it was very dehydrated.

There didn't seem to be any 'guts' inside other than the large mass that when pressed made it squirt the urine (assuming it was a severely enlaged bladder).

Hey Phantom, i'm new to this forum and i'm loving these well written posts! This disease thing, reminds me of my sisters rabbit that caught maggots. It's pretty disgusting, but the flies lay eggs around the rabbits back side, the maggots hatch and begin eating the flesh of the rabbit whilst it's still alive! It's called Fly-Strike or Myiasis  The urine thing sounds pretty common for bunnies, they can have a multitude of different coloures/ consistencies depending on their diet.

tdesnos: Yeah, Fly Strike affects many animals, especially when they have poor grooming or the slops (even worse when together). I've shot a fair amount of bunnies now, and found a couple of 'odd' ones including this http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...howtopic=113754

All the bunnies I have taken so far have had a cloudy whitish urine bar that one :hmm:

Stealthy, thats a truly nasty disease indeed. If it is VHD then its doing to devestate the area very quickly. This one certainly seemed Anorexic and if it was one of the rare few survivers then it's a good job I got it, although it could have been running around with it for weeks

Ah right, probably was summat up with it's urine then! Weird... :hmm:

Being shot probably came as something of a relief to the poor bugger by the sounds of things.
