Cleanspade 3,324
the lad has a plummer.an 8ft dig to a rabbit is good for them IF they can find and hold it  . spoken like a real tough diggin man. proud of ya. any more words of wisdom i start a terrier when its ready (in my eyes) for rats. i would wait till its around six to eight months. and later if i felt it could help. for fox anytime between one and three years. depending on the dog. pointer 543
anybody who has a terrier for ratting and bushing and gets out enough will run into a few fox each season.maybe not many but lets say a dozen.therefore a terrier usually self enters and is started by accident. spiderpig 39
ive started a few of on foxes at 7 months onwards,if not been going by 12 or 13 then they have usually gone.... i find that if a dog has the right credentials then early starting will not put them off only encourage and educate leading to a much better dog in the future, plus at that age the chance of getting a really good tacking is slim unlike holding off a very keen dog untill say 18mnths when it flys to ground thinking that it is the master off all... im not saying my methods are right or the best ect ect, its just how i like them to be,, Quote Link to post
Toka 10
oooppps.....forgot about the 'real' digging men  . should have been a bit more specific about what i put....i was only giving advice from my own experience and what i want out of my pup!! although no mention was made of what breffni was wanting out of his pup in the first place.... i knew that there would be others who's main aim was digging for fox , and i was sure they would give their opinion, but i want a bit more out of my pup....if he comes across a set i hope he will get to grips but thats not the be all and end all for him or me. plenty of room on here, and out there in the fields for all....no matter what the aims keep it fieldsports!! gnipper 6,584
All you boys who keep your dogs away from rabbits like the plague do you never let them off the leads like? Its inevitable they'll bump into one or two when your out in the countryside and imo most dogs but especially terriers will be keen on the scent of a rabbit even if its never seen one.
