butcherboy 68
New to this terrier work so need some advise. How exactly do you back-fill after digging to your dog? If you've broke through to a tunnel then just putting back the earth you removed won't work as it'll just block the tunnel won't it? How do you fill it & keep the tunnel in tact, or is the idea to collapse the tunnel? Cheers for any info as I don't want to leave the coutryside looking like a bomb site Quote Link to post

"Earth!" 503
you can cap the foof of the tube with thick branches or a flat rock im with scent on this, its easier as most are to hand. Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
Branches wont hold the weight of a bullock let alone a tractor. This is why the country side is full of potholes. If your terrier has bottled up it's quarry in a stop end then a large flat rock wont help the next time either. By putting all the soil you've removed by digging into the hole and then cutting sods from the ditch or the kick out from the entrance make sure you leave the dig a few inches higher than when you found it. When it settles the ground should be fairly flat. If it was a stop end then you've just shortened the tube by a foot or two. If you've badgers or rabbits in the area they'll enlarge them again. Good backfilling is one of the reasons some of us are digging the same places for many years whilst others are running out of holes to try. Quote Link to post
gizmo 1
when your back filling dig a good dozen good sized sods fill the bottom of your dig with the sods then jump on them to compact it then start puttin your soil in jumping on it to compact it every so often then with the rest of your sods to cover the top of yor dig i usually leave it a good foot above ground to allow for any sinkage and job done Edited September 17, 2009 by gizmo Quote Link to post
dev 226
totally agree with neilcooney on this one, braches arent worth a fuk. dig some sods and fill the hole right Quote Link to post
