Educate me on the .222 Remington please

Recommended Posts

So I came across this nice .222 Remington rifle and consider using it for fox, badger and the occasional member of the capreolus capreolus family...

.222 is the minimum caliber for taking roedeer in Germany, so it would be fine legally. But is it really enough? Any experience? How far can I reach out with the .222 and effectively drop roedeer?

Thanks for your input

i had a .222 ( rem mohawk) while in germany and was very happy with accuracy( 150-200m),good for fox/badger and does the trick for roe with good shots. i find the .223 causes too much damage for roe( maybe just the ammo used?) but has more "damf".

take care to get the right ammo for the .222( some do not reach 1000 joule)

i later bought the 30 06 spr and used it for everything from fox through deer and boar. as a second (schoenzeit) weapon the.222 is great if you dont have to worry about pigs when sitting out at night.

I'd have said about 200 yards. I'd also get .223 not .222, but I don't know what the availability of ammo is like for .222 in Germany.

Availability is not too bad in Germany, there are about 10 different loads of factory ammunition (remington, norma, RWS..) available as far as I could tell. I do prefer the 223 over the 222, no questions asked - but buying a very cheap (pricewise, not qualitywise) 222 beats not having the money for a good 223 ;)

I bought the RWS Jacketed SoftPoint yesterday, they should reach the energy requirements.

I usually have my 308 which is fine and all but as boys will be boys and a new toy needs to be played with we have some areas in our "Revier" where I won't run into a boar and even roe is not that frequent. Perfect playground for the 222 I reckon?

So whereabouts in Germany have you been hunting?

i started in paderborn (jaegerkurs). my father in law had the shoot in kreis hoexter ( kollerbeck/marienmuenster) where i had "freie buchse" permission on all game. then went to metelen(steinfurt) and worked as a keeper for a while untill i moved to dortmund( davensberg). leading a pack of terrier i was in brandenburg, westerwald, gamburg, mosel taal, rheinland pfalz......so i got around a bit.

your in hannover right?

I'm a little confused about your comments on meat damage with the .223 and suggest ammo choice as the problem and not the calibre.

I am also more than a little confused about your comment of some .222 not reaching 1000 joule, I'm not aware of any that get that high, (correct me if I'm wrong) most just manage a bit over 1000ft lb!

Things are different in a number of ways in Germany but I see no problem with .222 and Roe.

BUT I would still avoid one and get a .223!

These calibres are legal in Scotland, but not England/Wales (******* daft) I have no issues with Roe out to around the 200 yard mark with these, I have put them down a little further...and I mean put them down...not spent the rest of the day running after them!

See Shooting Times Ballistics Table for .222 Rem. EG

40 gr Accutip

MV 3600 fps = 1098 mps

ME 1151 ft.lbs = 1561 joules

Joules are smaller than ft.lbs so you get more of 'em for your money!

the law in germany says you must have 1000 joule and a min of 5.6 mm to shoot roe( 6.5mm and 2000 joule for other species of deer and boar).

SOME rounds will only bring 900j or less(target ammo) and are therefore not legal for roe. i have never worked in ft/lbs but ric seems to have cleared it up anyway, cheers.

the general consensus of opinion of people i know over there seems to be that the 223 causes alot of haematome( bruising) as i have never shot deer with it i would not know.it may be a change in ammo would make the difference.

i would stick with a caliber i can use on all game in the shoot(roe, boar and any predators) as you have the .308, if the oppotunitie should arise to shoot a pig and you have the .222 with you then i should imagine the air may turn blue.

if its just a case of new toy syndrome then take a look at a new sight for the .308 it always satisfied any urges i have had

the .222 is a good caliber for off season and when you are just out for roe( invariably the pigs will march onto the wheat/oats where you are sat when you are not suitably kitted out i speak from experiance:icon_redface:( sat on with my combined .22 mag/20g shot for fox hence no solid shot. boar came around 40 yards past the high seat on the mais stubble!!!!)

whatever you choose mate all the best and viel waidmannsheil!!!
