wexford Pa 84
Out lampin tonight and after just 3 runs my bitch came back lame on her back leg and she kept dropping her back as she walked, she wasnt lifting her leg she was puttin it to the ground but droppin her back as she threw leg back then left her leg trailing.. Now she had an injury 12 weeks ago where she came back lame after a run and later became swollen around the tendon at her hock and i was told she bursted a blood vessel, so i bathed it in warm water for a week to break to blood and increase the flow.. Now the same injury seems to have occured but no swelling............ Does anyone have any idea what the injury is? Cos i feel i was misinformed on it last time.......... skycat 6,174
It sounds more like she ruptured (tore) the muscle the first time: the blood runs down inside the skin which causes swelling. Unless a torn muscle is properly treated with massage and rest it will leave a lot of scar tissue which doesn't stretch like healthy muscle when the dog runs. If I'm right then the greyhound vet will advise you to massage the leg every day and especially before the dog runs. If it is a tendon that is damaged then the problem is similar, but worse: whichever it is the dog is unlikely to be able to a hard day or night's graft in future: a few easy runs OK, but anything prolonged or in numbers will bring up the problem again and again. I do hope that I'm wrong for your's and the dog's sake, but in my experience these things never go away once there is a lot of scar tissue.

My dog damaged his tendon end of last season on his front leg, his paw went from standing on the knuckles nice and strong to flat and splade on the damaged one. I went to the greyhound vet and he said the tendon was damaged. There was the option to operate but he advised against it saying it could go again after. He just said see how he goes with out it and i might just be reduced in the amount of runs that i would normally get in a night. I just rested him for a long time as he kept carrying his poor then i would very gradually increase his walks keeping him on the lead so he would run/play with other dogs then bout 4mounths later let him of the lead had him running again. took him out last week with the lamp and gave him only 2 runs and never came up lame. I also put corta flex into his diet wich is like a joint supplement which is ment to be good. Another Option a lurcher person told me was maybe acupuncture.
wexford Pa 84
Cheers for ur bit of input skycat.. For my sake n the dogs i hope she's gonna be ok.. I know everyone would this about their own dog but she's great little bitch n it'd kill me if its a long term or even life long injury.. Either way she wont be leavin my yard! I had bein massaging in warm water everyday for 1 week then every 2nd day on the 2nd week. On 3rd lead walking. 4th week then gave her short bits of free runnin/trotting.. From about 6 weeks till now (12 weeks) she's just been gettin 20-30 mins road work in the mornin and 20 mins free runnin in the evening, she's seemed fine.. Anyway enough jabberin on, im off to ring my hound man but i would like to hear other opinions..

Cold Ethyl 63
My bitch had a bad injury earlier in the year and the vet told me to get complex vitamin B i can highly recommend this it does work i wasnt convinced thought the vet was at it but it does a great job instead of 6 week minimum recovery she was fine in less than 2 weeks. Its cheap if you buy chemist own brand stuff I pay around 2 quid for 120 tablets one a day in each dogs food and they have thrived on it.That and id be giving some glucosamine and fish oil capsules to help the other joints cos if its favouring a leg the other 3 will be under strain.
