Old school ratting again.

Recommended Posts

A day out a old school farm who still does things the old way saw us running a few terriers at some rats whilst they were threshing out a rick, things were very quiet to start with but the kids and the pup occupied themselves catching mice until the rats appeared and appear they did but they had us worried for a bit as the rick was almost gone before they did show.We had a loose count up at the end and got the 100 mark with the rats and half a bucket of mice, the white russell was new to the game but got stuck in and soon learned to bite harder lol.The plummer pup wasn't let go on big rats as he's only 15 odd weeks old but he sure got stuck into them after the big uns had finished with it,he was allowed a few greys and dealt with them fine. Not loads of pics as we were kept busy but a few.

As it goes stevie most of the pullies are above terrier hight and just about all of the rats bolt away from the thresher so it's quite safe for them,i brushed up against one of the wheels yesterday and scarred the sh*t out myself as once they get you they get you good and proper. As for Nick doing some work he got a sweat on for sure and the dust from a threshing session has to be seen to be belived, still good to be involved with it all and a real look into how things used to be done. One of the reasons the kids missed school was not just for the ratting but to show them a real part of history working and a unique chance for modern kids to see it.

A proper education!!!

As you know Nick and I worked in such a place with ungaurded belts, frightening stuff pre health and safety.

Don't think I'd survive working the stacks such as you do, dust would have me on my knees weazing in no time. Bloody soft I am nowadays. Almost a working museum there by the looks of it.
